Memories of the 70’s

….60s/70s;

photographers behind the goal, the pitch getting bald down the middle as the season progressed, Gordon West scratching his angles on the corner of the six yard box, the blokes with Popeye arms carrying that advertisement board for the Stadium, the A-Z on the side of the pitch for half-time scores, the half-moon behind the goal, the railings, the Boys Pen, the cushions, the footy magazine inside the programme, the power cuts and no floodlit matches, referees coming onto the pitch long after the players, Home Internationals at Goodison for NI.

I went to my first away game in 75. An endless journey on the footy train from Lime Street to Plymouth. Fish and Chips in a cafe with bread and butter of course. I couldn't get over how many fans went an away game so far away. A 3-1 courtesy of a brace from Lyons and one (I think) from Cliff Marshall. As a 13 year old, I thought it was amazing. Of course, we then lost 0-2 at home to Viv Busby in the next round. An early introduction to 'Everton that'.

The boys pen just a massive metal cage really, great views if you climbed up a bit.

Free kicks taken without doing a johnny wilkinson stance and taken within a minute even if winning, throw ins taken within seconds instead of 30 secs. If down on the deck for more than 10 secs then it was a serious injury. Proper mans football with slide tackles and physicality that would be deemed yellow or red in an instant nowadays. Not playing around the back for 5 minutes

Going to Burnden Park in 1977 and seeing us at last get to a final. Never simple with us though as Duncan McKenzie missed his penalty. A great atmosphere in an old, definitely old, fashioned stadium, which have long gone now.
Do you remember the floodlight shorting out were we were stood at the away end? Looked like it was going to blow up🤣 A real firework display.

Queuing for tickets for the semi-final match against Bolton. Plenty of flares in evidence. :lol:

There seemed to be more bald referees then compared to now.

One of the things I remember most about the seventies at all footy grounds, was the fact that there was hardly any women inside the grounds.

The only women I remember being in Goodison at that time, were crazy old dears, who swore like troopers, chain smoked and were probably on the cusp of dementia.

They always seemed to be by themselves too !
I convinced my younger sister to come when she was about 13.
Now half a Century later, she still has a Season Ticket and is more fanatical than me. :D

I was leaning on a barrier at the Bolton game which collapsed just before kickoff which i believe our fans were blamed for but it just gave way.
I was travelling back down south with escla so we had all the windows on the coach back to Manchester
A great night all the same

The “ Ernie Hunt” goal for Coventry , 71/72 ish , remains a weird memory . In those days you could move around Coventry’s old ground , we’d come to a halt , all I saw was a ball going directly up in the air , coming down , rising again into the back of our net. It wasn’t until I got home and watched MoTD that I knew what happened. Somebody had the ball between their feet , flicked it up in the air, Hunt hit it in on the volley . It was banned afterwards as a double-touch , so only occurred against us. Everton that.
