2025/26 Thierno Barry

I expect that was simply just down to the desperate need of new injection in the game.

Not sure what Moyes see's personally, he's probably stuck thinking why are neither of my strikers staking their claim to the position.

Just think you might get a different outlook from Barry with a more direct player behind him.
I agree , Doesn't matter who plays /played up front. Calvert Lewin ,Beto , Barry...all isolated and all struggling to get in the game.
If only their was someone in charge capable of identifying and rectifying the problem.

He clearly isn’t a natural target man (35% duels won), someone who picks up the ball and drives at defenders (25% dribble success), or good at creating chances for those around him (1 chance created).

Watched some highlights of him at Villarreal and his goals seemed to come from either balls played in behind or deep crosses. We need to get better at providing the sort of chances he thrives on if he’s going to succeed here. We’ve had similar issues with Beto; forcing him to play a role he isn’t suited to, then everyone getting frustrated when it doesn’t work.

There is enough creative talent for us to fashion the chances our strikers need. If we do that and they still fail then fine, but at least we’ll know it’s because they aren’t good enough and not because we set them up to fail.
Beto was here already, but why on earth Moyes had any part in buying a player who's game is totally unsuitable for the set up Moyes prefers is odd at the very least. Beto in a Dycheball team was weird enough.

You are assuming there isn’t a strategy to mould him into whatever Moyes / the recruitment committee think he can / should be.
I very much doubt Moyes is ‘easing him in’ while he changes the teams tactics to suit a newly recruited prospect.
Changing them / focusing on getting the ball to £100m England international and treble winner Grealish is one thing, changing it to suit Barry is something else entirely imo.
I think it’s much more likely they are trying to get him to play in a different way to suit what Moyes wants imo. Whether he can or not, time will tell I guess.

I do agree though we seem insist on not playing to the strengths of our strikers, but that said there’s been a couple of balls played in behind for Beto to run onto lately (one of his supposed strengths) and he’s made a right mess of them 🤷‍♂️

I don’t believe he was purchased to be moulded a certain way, I think we saw a player in our price range who had performed well in his age bracket and hoped he would improve further and eventually be sold for a profit.

The best managers tweak tactics to get the most out of their players, and I don’t think we would have to drastically change things to accommodate his strengths. I struggle to see him adapting enough to become a typical Moyes striker, but time will tell.

Said it before, say it again, if you need a certain kind of player and you can’t afford it save your money until you can.

Too many times we have bought players that are just not good enough. Since Lukaku we have know we needed a striker that can guarantee us at least 10/15 goals a season and the ones we have spunked tens of millions on have failed to score that many in total!

Playing 4 5 1 does not work for us but we stick with it. Most clubs play 4 3 3, we don’t have the players to do this or. Manger who has the balls to do this. However, with the players we have I think we would get more out of them playing a 4 4 2 traditional style, strong in midfield but more positive up front.

Clubs for too long have been facing us knowing we have nothing up front, Barry and Beto have shown they can’t play upfront on their own so try them together?

Don't honestly think playing them together would work, they'd just trip over each other. Maybe one of them with Alcaraz playing off him? But then Moyes is getting more stubborn with age.

Not really... you're into horses. Barry looks like a new born foal, all limbs and uncoordinated whilst Isaak is a two year on the gallops

….i get the movement bit, in horsey terms I’m not keen on Barry’s ‘gait’ and I did wonder if he was purchased on stats and video clips without sending people to watch him.

He might be ‘one for the future’ but he’s not looking like ‘one for now’.

I'd be amazed if they hadn't watched Barry fairly extensively, partly because he was a pretty serious investment by our standards and partly because he was playing in one of the biggest leagues in the world and then a fairly major junior international tournament afterwards. It would have been quite difficult for one of our scouts not to have watched him a couple of times even by accident I'd have thought.

Isn't 433 and 451 essentially the same thing? wide players drop deep when defending to make 451, push up when attacking to make 433.

And does anyone actually play 442 any more? They would just get overun in midfield, unless the plan is to play hoofball?

Would depend on your front two and how well they pressed...so for us a non starter.
