Holidays 2025

Just booked a last-minute flight to Bilbao for a few days. Planning on visiting San Sebastian and Santander as well while in that part of Spain (drones and French air traffic controllers permitting).
You used to be able to get this slow train from Bilbao to Santander that stopped at every tiny group of houses on the way. This was 20 years ago but imagine it still runs. Probably the most stunning train journey I’ve ever been on.

Just googled and it’s still going. Would recommend

Appreciate that 😎👍

I only want to do a short visit in Bangkok, then go a few other places as I did Phuket and Krabi Island last year.

Chiang Mai might be of interest actually 🤔

I will take my time with it, as I'm going to try and do it the cheapest way possible.

I have had a quick look at Agoda and there are loads of reasonably prices on there 😎👍

Do you live in Thailand?
Yeah. I've been living and working here for almost 20 years. I split my time between Bangkok and Hua Hin depending on whether I'm working from the office or not.

If you want to do things cheaply the trains to Chiang Mai are pennies but they aren't European quality...

Agh, thats ace! I envy you.

Ok, thats noted 👍👍

I found some decent flights last night, so it looks like im definitely going for it.

Thanks Andy, you have been a great help and it's very much appreciated 😎👍

Love going to Thailand. Was up in Chiang May earlier this year then headed all the way down to Koh Lipe with friends. It's a lovely island but the 5 hours on a speed boat to get there is a bit brutal. But would definitely recommend hiring a longtail for a few hours at sunset and just get them to take you off the coast on the opposite side of the island with a few beers and just lie in the sea watching the sunset.

If I am taking friends who haven't been before, I normally do the island hopping from Bang Rong pier in Phuket on the opposite coast to the airport and do Phi Phi, maybe Koh Yai Noi / Yai, Koh Lanta and Railay - love Koh Lanta. Favourite beach in the world.

I got a place in the Philippines and would definitely recommend that as an alternative to Thailand (although an extra 3-4 hours flight). But really really cheap still in most place and perfect for island hopping. Manila is tough going (tho Ringside is funny as hell), but to get around, flying into Cebu works well. Heading over there in a few weeks to kill the builder grrr......

Oh any recommendations are welcomed! For this trip, we'll be in Dublin, Edinburgh, and Galway. I'm up to hear any tips!
For Edinburgh, depending on the weather, the walk from Dean village to Stockbridge is very nice and away from the crowds.
Plenty of very good established and new restaurants about.

For beers and drinks, there’s a lot of nice bars in the new town, and leith. Would avoid George and rose street.

Thanks for this! Will definitely check these out.

Dublin - Clearys pub, the Confession box, Gravediggers (beside free botanic gardens), boar's head (all for quality Guinness) and few tourists. Stay away from temple bar for socializing

Galway - Tigh Coilis, Taaffes, Murphys bar; all good Guinness and proper pubs
If it's dry in Galway go for cliffs of moher bus tour. If it's wet or drizzly, don't. Same for connemara tour.
