Birmingham City Owner Tom Wagner

Player Valuation: £50m
Sounds a charmer…

Speaking at The Summit, part of Leaders Week London 2025, Wagner, an American investor, said: "I think the top clubs in English football have to be protected at all costs. We can't take too much from the top clubs to support the pyramid.

"If you have a situation where the top teams are not dominant, I mean internationally, with the very best players and product, then the interest will wane - particularly from the US market which will drive interest and capital flows into football.”

This is the exact opposite of what makes sport interesting and deep. There should be variety and opportunity for any club to grow, if well managed, at the top level.

This is the problem with the US business in sport, they only focus on brands, big money and what they can get with a product. They care nothing for heritage, support, community, records, or the development of success over time.

I just with they'd all recede back to their own country and try miserably to fail to convince the world that baseball, and egg and basketball should be taken seriously for the benefit of their wallets.

100% agree.

If you've seen this documentary, you will be fully aware that he is a MASSIVELY WEIRD bell end. So many off key comments that reflect badly on him, and he seems to be completely unaware of how he comes across.

edit: I thought the thread was about Tom Brady.

The fact you can just pick your club up and move it to another state, it paints the picture perfectly on American sports/franchise..

Exactly. Its never "your club" in thst model - its a thing you might show a transient interest in for a few months while you're a profiled customer. To them its purely business and marketing. Just like Sky they just don't "get" heritage or history, which is what makes the game great.

Your average person over there follow college sport more then the professional game, like you say, its business and customers, nothing more. Keep it away from our country and stop trying to sell it with a pretty name at the forefront..

People like Tom Brady are just used like a Designer label..

Protect the few teams at the top and you will get a situation like you have in Scotland where the game has been dominated by the old firm for so long that the rest of the teams couldn`t compete with them, and it meat the old firm only had good competition from European games, where they are now getting outclassed in.
