A no win situation

I think Moyes missed an opportunity to go with a slightly different set up than we have been using this season. We had 3 natural centre backs and a natural right back starting, and I think it was a chance to play 3 centre backs and use Coleman and McNeill as wing backs. He had us line up this way in the US friendlies like this, but instead he played O`Brien at right back and Coleman out on the left. If he was going to change the team around so much for this game I can`t understand why he couldn`t change the shape of the team too.

GK - Pickford
RB - O'Brien
LB - Aznou *
CB - Tarkowski
CB - Keane
CM - Gueye
CM - Garner
ACM - Alcaraz *
LW - Grealish
RW - Dibling *
CF - Beto

* = change

Had Rohl been available then he could have started over Gueye. Alcaraz was forced out to the left during the first half due to the general state of McNeil - it would have made sense to have started Beto as he and Alcaraz have shown how well they link up together.

On balance something like the above team would have surely been accepted by the vast majority of Everton fans. Ndaiye, Dewsbury Hall and Mykolenko would have got to rest and start off whilst the team remained strong sprinkled with a few lads getting the nod to show what they can do not wholesale changes.

Moyes has managed over 1000 games - he obviously has the experience and I think he has been been brilliant since coming back. However, last night was the first proper head scratching moment and it was highlighted by pretty much everyone on here pre-game.

Tomorrow is a new day. Perhaps we are full of too many expectations this early in the season when so many new players have to still find their feet in the Premier. But, certainly, there is no excuse for any of our 'established' players to go missing. After all, they need/should be playing for their places but, then again, maybe they see who they are competing against so it doesn't threaten them. If that's the case then they need booting. It also doesn't bode well that a team like Wolves who have been struggling can make a swathe of changes and still beat us. This result gives them a big leg up, something we can ill afford even if it was only a cup match.

Should Moyes have played what everybody thinks was his strongest XI, last night, and Grealish and AN OTHER got injured, being kept out were out for a long period, he would have been slated for playing them. He just can’t win. Accept who we are. We’ve had to live with this for years, and it’s not going to change overnight. We all want success but there’s no guarantee when.
There are more than two options though, mate. He could have rotated and come up with a far more balanced lineup than the one he did.

There was a way to win, but he engineered a loss.

You’re just framing it on a completely false premise for some reason. Nobody would have complained if we’d picked our strongest team and somebody got injured, that's just how football works and we all understand it.

I do think it’s worth pointing out again though that there is a big middle ground between putting out your best team and doing what we did last night, which is basically put out a reserve team. Shaking it up by giving starts to a couple of those who are closest to the first team would have been fine, changing the line up to the point that it’s completely unrecognisable and all balance and chemistry is gone wasn’t.

For context, bookies had us down at 18/1 to win the tournament, a roughly 5% chance. The wailing is a bit much.
Another argument framed on a false premise. Nobody is saying that putting our strongest team would have meant we definitely won the trophy, they’re just disappointed that we didn’t give ourselves a chance. Football fans like their team winning games, who knew?

The fact the winner gets 100K says it all. It’s just a weird tournament that seems totally out of its time.

Nothing to do with the prize money could be a tenner for all I care it was still being in a cup competition after 2 rounds and trying to get back to Wembley and a trophy

Again as I said earlier that’s fair enough , what’s our price now ?

I don’t think We’d have won it but I don’t imagine palace and the horse punchers thought they would win what they did . making wholesale changes that were a key factor in us going out has removed that 5% chance you quoted .

I’m just tired of consistently going out of cup comps early . There is absolutely a mentality right through this club that has brought us to the level where it seems to be acceptable that we shouldn’t try because we basically won’t win anyway

I just think the Carabao Cup is a giant stitchup. They’re openly trying to keep the scab sides from facing each other until absolutely necessary. The whole thing takes place in midweek, so rich teams with depth can field stronger sides. The semifinals are two legs to reduce the odds of a pesky upset.

I’d rather go full bore at the FA Cup which is more prestigious and frankly easier to win.

I didn’t hate the line up personally. I think the players that came in really let Moyes down. They ranged from diabolical (McNeil, Travers) to mediocre (Dibling). I think the manager would have expected better.
I agree with this stance except I felt that at least one of Grealish or Ndiaye should have started to add a little more attacking flair to our final third.

I am not even bothering looking, but
Im going to assume the first post will be...

"Were not winning the league, so why is he prioritising it?"

Hes seen first hand exactly what a trophy means to a club in a dry spell. He coached us for years, then took West Ham on and saw the ecstacy.

He could have easily made 3 changes there, Ndiaye, KDH & Mykolenko out, and slotted in Garner at full back, Iroegbunam in the middle & Dibling out wide.

No one remembers where Everton finished in 1949-50 season, but bet you people remember 1966, 69-70.

I won't accept who we are. Were breaking the shackles of "little old everton". 3,000 fans and would have been a lot more there last night had we been given the tickets. We deserve better, the club shouldn't be plucky Everton now.
