We need to buy him more than Southampton need to sell him, so I really don't see Saints suddenly relenting and dropping the price. I imagine they'll know this and he'll end up back in their squad at the weekend while we scrounge around offering not-quite-enough for the one position it was absolutely non-negotiable we filled before the start of the season.

The last thing we could have afforded with this is a saga, let alone another one that leaves us empty handed. A right winger needs to be signed immediately, and if they want it to be this guy then it's up to Everton, not Southampton, to make it happen. But I imagine that ship has sailed.
