Summer Transfer Window 2025 Thread

I'll be happy to get to July 1 so we know for definite what's going on. Still no extension for Gueye, concerning that we haven't been informed that Keane and Calvert-Lewin are leaving. Knowing our luck, Gueye will get a mega-money offer from Saudi, and we'll keep the other two.

The club needs to be making moves quickly, the longer it goes on without any movement, the more concerning it will become for the fans who will get the impression that money for a rebuild of sufficient quality - ie. to have us challenging for Europe which has to be the aim given how tight the league is - is not there.

Those links to Fred concerned me a bit over the weekend, I sort of see him as a potential replacement for Gana, so that made me think, maybe Gana is going?

Moyes seemed confident Gana was going to sign, but would he really say anything else? I personally wouldnt mind resigning DCL and Keane, dependant on wages, I think Keane is OK as a 4th Choice CB and if we can get DCL fit and get some RW's in I think he can score in a Moyes team. I would still like us to get in another forward, Like Barry or Woltemade though.

This is fair comment, but Mykolenko isn't a terrible player. If we took a slight gamble on a left back with genuine attacking quality, you have the potential to be able to bed him in gradually. We didn't ever really have that with Patterson because of his own injury issues and Coleman's - essentially any time Patterson looked like getting a run he got injured and he was also thrown in when he shouldn't have been because of Coleman's injuries a couple of times.

FWIW there was similar apprehension about Baines when he first arrived - Lescott was preferred at left back for a little while!
There does seem to be selective memory on just how much patience was afforded to some of our best players of the Moyes era - Baines, Coleman, Osman, Jagielka.

For me, anybody who’s up for re-signing the goal shy crock DCL and calamity Keane need to stop chatting bollocks.

Absolutely horrendous idea.

I’d reluctantly understand DCL as a backup striker but we’d soon regret it when he goes missing for 2/3rds of the season again. He’s a drain on wages and offers very little in the way of recompense.

As for Keane, not even sure what to say to that it’s such a bad idea.

One link. By one sketchy Turkish source. Reposted by a load of aggregator sites.

Good player to rotate for Mykolenko.

Also, gives the ditherer a season or two to find a young player to sign.

Just to add, I'd be rather impressed if we brought in Tagliafico on a free. There would be serious competition between him and Mykolenko at LB.

Same sort of profile as Mykolenko though - he's defensively solid, but he gives you very little in terms of build up play with the ball.

What we desperately need on that side is some quality in terms of delivery and progressing the ball - if Ndiaye is encouraged to drift into central areas, that means our left back has to provide attacking width. Mykolenko is poor at this, despite trying to step it up under Moyes, and it isn't Tagliafico's game either. We were a little bit spoiled by 15 years of Baines then Digne, but quality on the ball has to be what you're looking for in another left back. There's nothing wrong with Mykolenko's defensive contribution, that isn't the issue, it's what happens when we have the ball and that should be the area of focus.

Why not look at it as having Argentina's left back join on a free. He then fights it out with Mykolenko every day in training and on the pitch for a starting place.

The possible £10-20mil budgeted for a LB can then be added to the budget for a different position and we could bring in a top attacking right back (e.g Wesley, Flamengo).

I'd be very happy with this.

Keane as 4th choice CB to save us from signing a replacement this summer wouldn't be a bad thing

He's 32 though and will want to go and play every week somewhere

not a reliable source that Fred link, just agent throwing his name out there.

Gana definitely staying for another year or two

But you get a couple of injuries and he’s playing, which is actually quite a bad thing.

I’m unfortunately not short sighted enough to forget all of his calamities because we kept a clean sheet at Newcastle.

1 goal and 2 assists in 18 games under Moyes (I'm only basing it under Moyes as Dyce wouldn't let him go over the halfway line).......for a full back who's first priority is to defend, is a decent outlay

Compare that to Keane Lewis Potter, who i thought was great last season at left back for Brentford (converted from left forward), 1 goal and 4 assists in 38 games
Kerkez got 2 goals and 6 assists in 38 games, which is good, but not far off what Mykolenko might get in a full Moyes season?

He's not perfect by any means, and a lot lies on him being our only left back, but he's improved massively going forward 2nd half of the season. Especially if you consider our best attacking player plays in front of him
I know you and I have opposing views on this, but I see Mykolenko as one of three major weaknesses last season's Everton side had in possession (Doucoure and Beto being the other two).

I know you've focused on assists there and you do have a point about the Dyche vs Moyes bit, but my eyes don't tell me he's suddenly better with the ball - just that he's further forward.

I hate to be a stat geek, but since you mentioned the assists bit I'd draw your attention to this...

Myko.webp

This is how he fares in some basic metrics vs other full backs in the top 5 European leagues - in other words, he's a below average full back in terms of what he does with the ball. Now, I'm all for relying on what my eyes tell me, but I'd argue that these stats are just backing up what I already thought.

I see that angle too. And I appreciate that times have moved on, however…

But when we had Coleman & mirallas. Baines & pienaar. Who was defending down the left/right?

to used our most loved neighbours: salah & TAA - who’s defending down their right? (And I don’t want someone as useless going backwards as TAA btw).

Good quality fullbacks can attack and defend. We have a fullback that can defend, Coleman who is injured and Patterson who seemingly can’t do either to the managers standards. Rapid wingers can attack and get back (quickly).

And tbf I haven’t got any names - they might not exist at our price range lol. But all I do know is that in every other position (and Myko to be fair) we are at least competent.

The other case for having a more attacking left ball is that it's branthwaite's side to cover, and he's so good and so mobile that we can afford to let a bit more space in behind there cos he'll sweep it up

which is what he does a lot for Mykolenko anyway
