I’m sure he would’ve jumped at the chance to play one of his songs in front of the fanbase that adopted it only because they beat his team and denied them their first trophy 41 years ago.

It would’ve been the second biggest honour of his life, behind playing at Princess Diana’s funeral.

I thought the farewell event was fine. The likes of McCartney were never going to be there and he had a tenuous connection with the club at best. It wasn't on at all.

It had the feel of a homely, family event and that struck the right tone. The only thing I found odd was Tony Bellews presence.

I thought Alan Myers might have made a good MC but either way I thought overall the right note was struck.
