Thomas Partey went straight into the team after completing his loan move this week and he lined up next to Lars Samardzic. Alberto Moleiro was picked for duty despite this week Everton rejecting a big money offer from Manchester United for the winger and Moleiro was disappointed the offer was rejected. Jarrad Branthwaite picked up an injury in the gym after tearing his pectoral and was ruled out for a couple of months which saw Ben Godfrey come in alongside Igor Zubeldia and Chrislain Matsima. Beto was chosen up top to lead the line and talks seemed to have stalled over a new contract for the Striker who is free to leave in the summer. Everton needed to get a win against a struggling Forest side, they had their first shot on target when Moleiro came down the left beating Sanagre and playing it inside to Samardzic, Partey was in space and he got the ball and his shot stung the hands of Vlachodimos. Samardzic took the ball in the middle and played a delicate ball forward which Valle chased and took into the box from the left side, he shot from a tight angle and it found the bottom right corner, 1-0 to Everton! Everton were defending much better throughout the first half, it seemed they have got their act together since the Palace thrashing. Igor Zubelida was caught from a tackle by Talisca and had to go off just before the break. With no Branthwaite available, it was Onana to come on in defence. Everton won the ball back and Partey knocked it wide to Roony, he found Samardzic who was looking for the run of Beto but he didn’t make it so he went left to Moleiro, he came down the left side and put in a good cross which the keeper anticipated well. Everton made three changes with 20 minutes to go, Digne replaced Valle, Garner came on for Samardzic and Mead replaced Beto up top. Forest came forward with a few minutes to go and Digne done well to cut out the forward pass from Talisca, he played it forward for Moleiro to run on to, he went past Richards and played it forward for Mead, was he offside? Mead took the shot but the flag was raised anyway. Lucas Digne came very close in stoppage time to make it 2-0 but his left footed shot was just wide of the post from 20 yards out. Garner passed forward to Mead a couple of minutes later, he turned and played in Moleiro to his left, Richards got in before he could pull the trigger and cleared the danger. Everton just needed to see out the last minute, Talisca took in in the final third, he was under pressure from Partey and took the shot that Pickford took down and held well. Pickford took the goal kick but it was won back by Forest and the ball was moved forward quickly by Lewis-Potter, Talisca picked it up, this time with more space and he shot from 25 yards finding the bottom left corner, Pickford unable to get across, 1-1! A late, late equaliser! Duncan Ferguson was furious with the fourth official, extra time was allowed to be played that shouldn’t have been and it allowed Forest back in it. A deflating moment for Everton as they lose the three points.

Duncan, you defended brilliantly today but one lapse in concentration cost you.

DF: We have to play to the very end and at that point I was telling everyone to get back in, there’s no way Talisca should have been allowed that sort of space and we didn’t deal with it.

Everton vs Leeds United

=Leeds result.webp

Injuries hit the Everton squad with Left Back Alex Valle breaking his foot in training and was going to be out for a few months. Matheus Cunha was out for a week with a knee injury, Igor Zubeldia and Jarrad Branthwaite were both sidelined for a few weeeks at least leaving Everton short in defensive numbers. Amadou Onana was back after a minor injury and made the bench. Frederico Redondo made the starting eleven for the first time this season, still to really make an impression at Bramley Moore. Moleiro and Roony were in attack with Beto ahead of them. Leeds were struggling in Postecoglou’s second season as manager, winning the League Cup last season but just one place above relegation, still in the FA Cup with Everton to play and in the last 16 of the Europa Conference League. Sinisterra took the ball wide on 19 minutes, he had Digne tracking him but got the cross into the box, Matsima knocked it back for Pickford to hold but the appeals from the Leeds players went up for a handball by Matsima, that seemed close. VAR showed that Matsima did handle the ball but his arms were by his side. Darren England checked the screen and awarded the penalty! Everton were not happy with this and England waved them away before they were booked. Wober put the ball down and went up against Pickford from the spot, he went right and Pickford got a hand to it but it was in the top corner, great penalty and Leeds lead. Everton were struggling to get into the game and Leeds could have been well ahead but great goalkeeping from Pickford kept them in this one. Patterson played it down the right to Roony who knocked it past Wober and used his pace to get forward, he cut it back to Patterson who crossed and Beto headed but it was easy for Meslier. Partey played a great ball right to Patterson, he whipped it into the box and Roony’s volley went over the bar. Ferguson changed things up at half-time, Konate came on for Moleiro and Onana replaced Redondo. He went with a back three and front three in attack. Ten minutes into the second half and Wover found Gnonto with a great forward pass, he held off Onana and smashed it into the top left corner giving Pickford no chance, 2-0. James Garner came on for Samardzic and Danny Mead replaced Roony Bardghji with 30 minutes to go. Mead made an instant impact, winning the ball and playing a one-two with Partey who sent it long for him down the right, he crossed low into the box and Beto tapped in, a goal back! Beto with his 50th Everton goal! Everton got cauht on the counter attack, the pace of Pineda through the middle carved Everton open, he moved it wide to Sinisterra and he crossed into the box, Pickford got a touch to it, saved at close range from Willock’s follow up but Dan James was there to knock it in, terrible defending from Everton today. Leeds were all over Everton and they couldn’t get the ball back, finally Konate nipped in and won it inside the Everton half, played it forward for Mead who knocked it on for Beto to chase, was he onside? He went for goal and Meslier saved his shot, great stop. Everton were fighting in the last 15 minutes and it was being lead by the young Danny Mead who was closing down effectively. Partey got the ball back in the middle and passed forward, Beto was fouled by Marmol but it went through to Mead, the referee played on, Mead went into the box and his right footed shot was tipped wide by Meslier. Mead went down after the shot holding his foot and had to go off, Gonzalez came on. 92 minutes on the clock, 5 to go, Pattersn forward to Gonzalez, he came down the right and crossed in for Konate to head into the bottom corner, 3-2! Is there a chance? Leeds went for the fourth and Pickford saved well from Sinisterra’s shot, this game has had everything! Leeds got the late corner and went for the short, Everton won it back and it went long, Patterson flicked it on into the box and Beto took it down, but he was offside. The referee blew his whistle and it was Leeds who took all three points, the team in 17th made it look easy at Bramley Moore and it’s Everton who looked like the team without a plan tonight.

DF: We struggled with Leeds quick transitioning and they were all over us in attack, we failed to track the runners and they were on top of the game. We chased it and got back into it but we have to play better and it just wasn’t very good. We have to be better.

MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL ANALYSIS

Jamie Carragher and Tim Cahill discussed Everton on Monday Night Football. “Everton have been a side that have surprised me” said Carragher, “they looked good last season and I thought this season they would have stepped it up a gear, but they haven’t. Look at the quality they’ve got and Duncan Ferguson has built a fantastic side, bringing in players like Konate, Roony and Moleiro who all look like they could play for top football clubs but at Everton something is holding them back. Now, I’m not saying it’s the manager or the staff but they have so much more to give and they’re not doing it. The midfield today gave the ball away so many times. Garner and Partey were lazy and I thought Partey was poor today. I expect him to pull this side together and get hold of it, that’s what Ferguson brought him in to do. We’re just not seeing enough and another mid-table finish will not be good enough. Ferguson has done a great job in turning this team around but they need to go up again and be banging on that door for Europe.”

Danny Mead picked up an ankle injury against Leeds and was ruled out for a few weeks to recover. Ferguson changed a few things for the trip to Turf Moor, he went with Gonzalez on the left, Moleiro through the middle with Konate up top. Cunha was back from injury and named on the bench. Everton really needed to win today to try to save their season and have one last push into the top ten. Samardzic took the ball in midfield and whacked it back to Pickford, he looked up and sent it long, a great ball forward for Moleiro, he moved into the box but his shot was just over the bar. Everton were in their stride but yet to find the opener, Muric in goal saved well from Roony in the first ten minutes and Partey looked to be dictating the game from the middle. He played a great ball wide to Gonzalez on 30 minutes, he put a low cross in and Konate hit it first time but Muric was off his line to block it, great stop. Burnley brought on Amad Diallo on the right who could cause problems in the second half. Godfrey won the ball back in defence and passed forward to Samardzic, he passed to the left to Gonzalez and he had James Justin to beat, he looked up and found Samardzic moving into the area, he played him in and Samardzic struck it on his left, taking a deflection off Murix before going into the net, finally Everton get the lead! Everton made three changes with 20 minutes to go, Onana came on for Digne with Godfrey going to Left Back. Partey came off for Garner and Cunha came on for Konate. Everton came close with 15 minutes to go, Samardzic put the corner into the box and Matsima headed towards goal but Muric made a fine stop on his line to deny him. Everton came forward again on the counter, Gonzalez squaring it from the left to Samardzic and he hit the outside of the post. Everton defended well and worked hard at the back to limit Burnley, Diallo was struggling against Godfrey who was having a fantastic game at Left Back. Everton kept fighting and eventually it paid off, Gonzalez came down the left and crossed to the far post, Roony jumped high to head in low at the post and beat Muric, 2-0! Time to breathe! Everton had been brilliant today and Gonzalez finally got a goal when Onana played a long ball into the box and he smashed the half volley into the top right corner, in off the post! Everton with a great win today! Burnley pulled a goal back and denied Pickford a clean sheet on 93 minutes when Justin’s cross from the right was headed in by Mavidid to make it 3-1. Everton with a much needed win today at Turf Moor. The football was good and they were solid at the back, they just need to find some consistency.

DF: I hope we can finish the season as strong as possible, too many poor results have affected our season and we just haven’t performed as well as we would have liked. If we can keep moving and try to better last season’s finish (10th) then it’s a step forward and we still have the FA Cup which is a massive focus for us. Leeds are our bogey team! They’ll give us a game this weekend but we want to take our chances and try to win it.

Lineup vs Leeds.webp

=Leeds result cup.webp

Fate brought these two teams together in another crucial cup encounter. We all know what happened in last season’s final and Leeds came to Bramley Moore recently and got another one over on Everton. With no new updates on injuries, it was a similar side that beat Burnley, James Garner was the only change, coming in for Thomas Partey. It was Leeds who came out on the attack and it paid off after 3 minutes when Joe Willock saw the gap and struck into the bottom right corner giving Leeds the lead and the home fans the right to gloat over the travelling supporters. Leeds hit Everton with a second and caught the defence napping making it 2-0 a few minutes later when Gnonto beat Matsima to the ball and slotted past Pickford. Everton in a shambles. Leeds were playing champagne football and Everton were just not with it at all. Konate signalled to come off after 30 minutes with an injury so Beto got changed and replaced him. Sinisterra took the corner from the left on 38 minutes, Pickford fumbled it at the post and Wharton was there to knock it in, Leeds dominant! Everton fought hard in the final ten minutes of the first half but Meslier was incredible denying them and keeping Leeds in front. Gonzalez came forward with the ball and played in Beto who went to strike but Marmol was brilliant and put in an excellent tackle which the Leeds supporters loved. Leeds had a free-kick on 50 minutes, Wharton played the free-kick forward and Monteiro held off Digne to slot low into the bottom corner and make it 4-0. Surely this is it. Cunha and Partey came on with 30 minutes to go replacing Samardzic and Moleiro. Out of nothing Roony whipped the ball into the box and Beto climbed above Balde to head one back for Everton. The goal will be no more than a consolation as Leeds played with a confidence that made them look far more superior and the Leeds supporters were in full voice. It was a dismal performance from Everton and they exit the cup without a fight. Another season of disappointment and an embarrassing performance in Yorkshire.

DF: We’re at a critical point of the season and we are having a bit of an injury crisis. Konate will be out for a few weeks, we need to assess his injury but we are down to one fit Striker. We’ve missed Jarrad and Igor these last few weeks and are desperate to get them back to full fitness. Lucas Digne will be suspended for the next match after getting booked tonight, we’ve just got to find a way to get through this tough period and remain competitive. Alex Valle has suffered a setback in his recovery and could miss the rest of the season.
