Never knew that!Mussolini was also responsible for the demolition of our first ground. Roma and Milan actually owned their grounds in the 1930s, the only Italian teams to do so. But our ground - which was modeled on Goodison Park! - didn't match Mussolini's taste, because it had wooden stands in a city of marble. So he ordered its demolition and built the PNF stadium (stadium of the fascist national party) to be shared by Roma and Lazio. This event marked the advent of state owned venues in Italian football, a disgrace. Milan was also forced to sell San Siro to the municipality of Milan and to share it with Inter.
Anyway, my post wasn't meant to blame American capitalism nor to imply the Friedkins will necessarily lead us to annihilation by erasing history and turning us into brands.
As for capitalism, Italian or British multinational companies are no different from their USA counterparts. I feel sorry for the employees, but, in a way or another, everybody lives in their exact same world.
I was just thinking about how things change over time, how the initial aims of a certain institution - in the case of Roma, "to be a football club worthy of the Empire's capital" - become something else, something completely different and unrecognisable over the course of a century. It's fascinating.
This you, Dave? The founders of Everton Football Club were social reforming politicians, some of whom - as doctors - worked with the poor and sick. They threw the doors of Goodison Park open in 1905 to feed tens of thousands of unemployed port workers when there was a catastrophic downturn in trade.
They'd have been horrified at the prospect of rapacious scum like TFG 'owning' what they viewed as a communal resource.
Think of these people who have to work all year for an average pay just to see the surplus they make for their company be splashed out on European football, with teenagers paid as 100 of them put together or more.
And then comes the "all associates day", and they must also wear the jerseys.
These pictures actually got me thinking about capitalism.
I also ask myself whether the founders of the two clubs ever thought for a second their creations would serve as a way to split the employees in halves at the meeting of a random American corporation in the 21st century.![]()
Never knew that!
Yes, it is.
Who in your opinion has probably been the most appropriate custodian of the club since it's inception in 1878?Yes, it is.
And that's a contradiction in what sense?
Do you think John Moores was a founder of this club?
He was an interloper from Manchester and he joined Everton's board about 90 years after the club was founded.
Lol!
Not sure that looks much like Goodison Park.![]()
AS Roma and Campo Testaccio: A Fortress To Call Their Own
After months of speculation, Jim Pallotta’s reign as President of AS Roma has finally come to an end. Under his leadership, Roma restored their pride on the field but seemingly hit a glass-cei…calcioengland.com
The rise…
Campo Testaccio was constructed in 1929 as a first marital home for the newly-formed AS Roma. The club had been established two years earlier through a three-way merger of Fortitudo-Pro Roma, Football Club di Roma and Alba-Audace. Under the encouragement of the Fascist regime, the intention had been to create a football club in the Eternal City that was capable of competing with the powerhouses of the North. However, the new club needed a venue befitting of these lofty ambitions.
Architect Silvio Sensi, the father of future club President Franco Sensi, took inspiration from British stadia, with Everton’s Goodison Park a particular point of reference. The rectangular design comprised of four separate wooden stands, with a narrow cinder track separating the tifosi from the pitch. The pitch itself was state of the art; it’s luscious grass surface, underpinned by an advanced drainage system, represented a welcome departure from the rudimentary pitches of the day which alternated with the season between dust-bowl and quagmire....

The original men who formed the club into a Ltd Co. in 1892.Who in your opinion has probably been the most appropriate custodian of the club since it's inception in 1878?
Ok fair answer...but to be honest you where actually advocating for potential Oil money ownership last summer. The original men who formed the club into a Ltd Co. in 1892.
Men of credibility, social standing and true sportsmanship.
They stood in stark contrast to the utter scum left across Stanley Park at our old ground.
Ok fair answer...but to be honest you where actually advocating for potential Oil money ownership last summer.
Probably the completely opposite to what you yourself would look for in potential custodians.
Quite...Again, that doesn't contradict what I said.
Our founders were good and decent people. They would have hated TFG, Moores and oil states owning clubs.
Football has changed forever now though. If you cant handle dirty money being involved in its ownership then dont support a top flight club.
