It’s much easier for 2/3 players to come into a team with a fixed system and style of play. Rather than trying to get 5/6 in. But agree it can be done.
I think it's one of those situations where people confuse cause and effect. It's as if people say 'no good teams ever do that' but they won't will they, because they don't need to. For a side like us, signing 7 good players would likely have more of a positive impact than signing 3, because we need significant improvement to the playing squad. We don't really have a defined style of play or a massively settled side so shaking things up just shouldn't be an issue.

Just don't get the love for him at all. He's not awful like but if after about 5 years of desperately needing an upgrade at right back the best we can do is a free transfer in his late 20s who's been relegated in his last 2 seasons in the league then this brave new era is going to be pretty underwhelming.
I guess the idea is that he would be cheap and he's versatile. In reality though I think he'll be looking for a contract to set him up financially for the future. Would rather look elsewhere.

There are countless examples of teams signing numerous players in one window and being absolutely fine. It's one of those weird things that everyone seems to repeat as if it's an undeniable fact when it's anything but.
Struggle to see how signing 7-8 good players wouldn’t improve us based on the low base we are coming from. Yes we might take 6 months - 1 season for us to reach the full potential but we would improve despite that

Whoever is in charge of bringing in the players in the summer needs to do business early.

With so many new players needed we can be scrambling around after the season has kicked off to still be trying to bring in 3-4 more.

We need 4 players before pre-season starts at a minimum
Isn't it unlikely that we will buy players before July as that would impact this year's PSR?

Hope we jettison Broja and never touch him again, keep Charly, get a few more in but for sensible money. I doubt we'll have (or even go for) some kind of 'statement signing', unless they're free, a-la JameZ.

I recall some very similar comments when we paid £8m for Idrissa Gana Gueye from a recently relegated Villa side...

Forest as a prime example.

But also, if you think about balance of first team squad, the actual core remains the same. Actual starting 11 it will only be 2/3 straight into the team initially.

Pickford, Myko, branthwaite, tarks/JOB, garner, Tim, Ndiaye, McNeil, Alcaraz (if he stays).

And the rest can then be integrated in time.

In the team of the year last season and all that.

Gana was a very statistically driven transfer though, in a year where Kante was at his most dominant best - Gueye was always a very close second, for a team that ended up getting relegated. At 8m it made it a no brainer. I'm not sure how Walker-Peters is playing this year but yeah it might be quite similar in that way. Some places are saying he's their best player, at a glance, and on a free it makes sense anyway, it's not like we're re-signing Ashley Young.

Not really a similar situation at all to be honest. I don't mean he's rubbish because he's been relegated, I'm just saying he's a player who has been knocking around for a long time and never really done anything of note or looked overly impressive. As I said, he's 'fine' and he'll do you a job but I would say full back is an area we need to prioritise as it's a major area of weakness for us. I don't think Walker Peters would be an adequate solution as a first choice player, and I think the only reason he's being mentioned is because he's free. Nobody would want us to pay £20m for him would they?
