Why do people think signing 10 players is impossible? We signed 8 players last summer, with almost zero budget.
My take on how many players we actually need between now and the start of next summer. Not gonna be daft and say we are gonna have two 11s of quality players with a group outside that say like you have at the biggest teams over here either, but just so that we have a squad capable of playing a full season whilst able to rotate, deal with injuries and suspensions etc without a huge drop in quality.
Keeper - Pickford, Begovic another tear (he's third choice and almost a coach in truth) need to add a capable backup as ours wants to move on
Experienced backup needed (4)
Fullbacks
Left side - Mykolenko, need either a starter and Mykolenko switches to backup or a backup to Myko
Right side - ---------------- need a starter and someone who can cover (unless Patterson remains as backup)
So need 3 fullbacks, minimum one starter and two quality backups
Centre back
Assuming Jarrod stays, we have O'Brien, Branthwaite, Tarkowski, need a fourth choice so either a veteran stop gap or a young player with big potential.
So one CB needed - 4th choice
Central mid
Assuming Gueye signs a one year extension on reduced wages, we have Tim, Garner, Gueye, so we need two out and out centre mids, Gueyes ageing our, Tom is an unknown quantity still, Garners had a lot of time out with injuries. So for those three central positions we need more like 3, of which one has to be better than we have already, one can be experienced cover and one with big potential (these can be around the current level we have)
3 needed - one guaranteed starter, 2 capable of battling it out as a starter.
Wide players
Assuming we make Lindstrom permanent, keep McNeil, then we need two players that are capable of playing wide one each side
2 Needed
Striker.
Assuming Dom leaves, Beto is sold, we need two starter quality ones assuming Chermiti stays and gets healthy.
2 needed one at least as good as DCL one capable of pushing the starter
Basically we need 12 players, a couple of those spots 'can' be covered by utility players, so a second striker could be a Richy type who can also play wide etc, same with fullback which at best can reduce the number down to 'maybe' 10 needed AND this is under the assumption that both Gueye and Lindstrom are retained .
But across the middle we need for those five positions at least two - more likely three starting quality players. Need a starting CF, need at least one starting FB (more realistically two needed).
Keeper and 4th choice CB are no problem and won't cost much, a couple of utility players like (Harper, Richardson) would massively ease the pressure on the rebuild too.
But breaking down the squad as I listed it may be going into the summer
Pickford, both CBs (Branthwaite/O'Brien/Tarks), one CM(Garner), Ndiaye and Lindstrom.
I'd say we have maybe 6 positions right now we could feel ok with those being a starter come next season, that's a hell of a lot to cover in one summer, we genuinely need to remove the problem by filling a minimum of 3 spots this Jan with one being a lock in starter quality and the other two being at least of the quality needed that I've stated.
The less we do this window btw, the greater the likelihood we end up retaining players not good enough on a tear extension.
