Everton January 2025 Transfer Thread

McNeil being the best crosser of the ball in the team and the way Moyes has been saying he wants to get more crosses into the box I think he might move him back to the wing and move Ndiaye centrally.
definitely see McNeil making a big impact on this team. Think we need to be looking for a centermidfielder this window and another winger that can play on the right.

N'diaye should reall be carrying the ball through the middle and making the runs down the flank that Doucoure was making.

If they can work McNeil into shooting and crossing positions arguably his output will be a lot higher. Can see Moyes looking for a Cahill type to play off the striker but maybe that’s me just looking back to far as I think he had fairly creative types at West Ham.

Genuine question though to those shouting about McNeil doing well and being the number ten, he just isn't that creative, yeah he's decent on set pieces, a decent crosser too but he's that one footed then central everything becomes focused on one side as he can only play that way - he also isn't particularly skillful in terms of threading great passes through. He needs too much time on the ball for me - has to switch it to his only foot he has, and stuff becomes pretty telegraphed.

Based on yesterday, I think we need to give Moyes some time and not expect signings this week.

It’s clear for the first time in a long time what our manager wants our playing identity to be and so if Moyes takes an extra week to make sure the players he brings in fit that then I am all for it.
Very fair. Given we are likely to be very restricted, no point buying in players to fix just the problems Dyche had (although many of those will remain the same).

Not a great player but one of our few who can chip in with around 5 goals a season. And definitely gets some assists too.

Has he? What makes you think that?

He is still only 21.

His best season goals wise was last season when he scored 8 and 2 assists. (And 7 of his goals came after game week 30).

He is currently on 4 goals and 5 assists half way through the season.

He has arguably developed his game as scoring at a similar rate but assisting more.
Yeah, just in terms of general play when I've watched him.

It could just be that I've seen Dan James on a good day and Gnonto on a bad day as FBref indicates Gnonto has been pretty consistently good this season in terms of his underlying stats and James has been horrible! Football eh!

Squad minimums we need are pretty obvious though.

Assuming everyone plays were they did yesterday as it's the it metric we have under Moyes

Mini in needed - another central mid, we have two beyond that zero ability to refresh them or change anything up centrally (I know we have Garner and Tim returning - but no guarantees they come back and don't break down plus cone summer we lost both Gueye and Mangala)
Left back - Mykolenko is playing better, but he's simply put not suited to what Moyes wants out of that position, beyond him we also have zero debt whatsoever and young most certainly cannot play the role)
Attacking mid - we have Doucoure who just can't play the position and add anything creatively whatsoever - a liability as the team tires too. Yup we could shift Ndiaye or Lindstrom there but that just creates a need for the positions they play instead.
Right back, right now O'Brien is playing there but it's just to get him on the out h as he's a better player than the other options, needs to be sorted out.
Right winger, we have nobody natural to the position, yeah Lindstrom looked great there yesterday in a weird hybrid role, but any knock we are left with Harrison, so zero depth
Striker - we have DCL then beyi d that absolutely nothing, Beto we want rid off, the other two are seemingly permanently injured.

Yeah we can maybe muddle through the season not sorting all of those out (say RB) - maybe CM if we get players back,
But CF, RW, LB we are one injury or loss of form away from starting Beto/nobody, Harrison and Young.

Thing is Moyes has never really been a defensive counter attacking manager, yes sometimes he plays that way but it's not the rule. He's generally pragmatic tactics wise and alters depending on the opposition, if we're home or away etc.

If we just focus on players suited to counter attacking then it'll be a mistake.

I'd have Richy back here in a heartbeat at the right financial deal for us

Well he is surplus to requirements at a team that plays attacking football too ..

The fact that he is so poor in possession is a problem for any team and with levy wanting to recoup as much as possible .. it’s a Jo from me

While I agree that he sometimes needs a bit too much time on the ball I disagree that he isn't that creative. He's not the best but he's decent at it. I think he will be helped too by a manager that uses his full backs more going forward and creates more space in the attacking areas.
