2024/25 David Moyes

I think he's a better manager now than the one we had.

He fell into the trap of parroting kenwright's tripe about us being grateful for just existing. That's all gone now and we can hopefully operate as a competent business with a competent manager.

He was worse than Kenwright for it mate. To be fair to Kenwright, occasionally he'd be a dreamer. Day one of Martinez he's saying "he'll get us champions league"

At Man Utd, they'd just pissed the league and he's saying a point at Newcastle would be a great result.

At Sunderland, before season started a miracle if they stay up etc.

All Moyes does is downplay expectation at every turn, then people wonder why he goes about 13 years without an away win at any traditional top 4 club.

On Moyes, I've often said of his tenure here that if I could go back in time and be told the 11 years we had under him would I take it, I'd have said no.

I'd say the same now, I wouldn't sign up for another 11 years of what he delivered before.

Sure, it's better than now. A lot better.

But you've got to have some hope in football.

I've spent years preaching pragmatism and having to take our medicine - but all that was on knowing we had a new stadium coming, with new owners and new manager to give us a real jolt in the right direction from the summer. Better times were coming, we just had to get through.

For us to go back to Moyes on a 2.5 year contract, and heralding his 11 years of 'success' - if that's success, then what's the point?

I think we of all clubs can be a little entitled for once - and it feels like we've just kicked the can further down the road.

I just hope we have someone lined up in the summer who can unite the fans, and bring us some hope.
Why don’t we take it one step at a time and stabilise the club first. I doubt any manager in this world can turn us into title contenders within 2.5 years if that is your expectation. How about survival this season, mid table next season and hopefully low european place the following year? That itself is an achievement for a club that is in a bad shape.

Yup. I wonder is it a generational thing. For younger people, Moyes has been as good as it ever got. For my generation, which grew up with the 80s side, Moyes was the very definition of honest, respectable mediocrity - doing his best in dreadful circumstances. Kenwright has been the curse - and his passing, and the passing of club ownership to properly-funded investors, made me think this club can finally punch its weight again - as a peer of our neighbours. When I was 18, only Liverpool had won more titles than Everton. Manchester United - the so-called "biggest club in the world", a phrase which now appears to be 1990s propaganda, had two FEWER than us. That remained the case until 1993!

Anybody who thinks United have the potential to return to their previous status as one of the top clubs in world football must also accept that Everton have the potential to return to ours. But we limit ourselves. The return of Moyes means we prolong the Kenwright culture that, effectively, killed this club.

I wish him well - but I am not sure he'll survive for as long as his contract stipulates. While Kenwright had to see him through many ropey runs of form in his 11 years for lack of cash or plausible alternatives, the Friedkins don't have that constraint.

As the old Chinese curses says, "may you live in interesting good times."

Well said. My sentiments exactly. Just had that conversation with one of my lads about Moyes’ statement. Ask any other supposed big club if they think 11 years with 1 Cup Final and once finishing fourth constitutes “success”. I was so wanting us to break out of this way of thinking and “rewire” the attitude and outlook of the whole club but we’ve just given the poster boy for “knife to a gunfight” and “knowing your place” a 2.5 yr contract. If anyone asks him at a press conference what he thinks Chairman Bill would think of it all, I think I’ll combust.

If its a contract to 2027, then I think the only way Moyes is replaced is if we get relegated

Just don't see any way we stay up and he is sacked and we have a 2 year contract to pay out. The following season I could see a change in the summer because demands would be much higher.
Depends how much he is being paid. If it was on the £5m Dyche is on, then can’t see us sacking after 6 months. If it’s on £2/3m then I could see it.

I imagine the new owners have put in lots of clauses/caveats/performance related elements to the contract.

We’re coming off the back of a manager that won 1 away game in a calendar year and equated fans wanting a mid table finish with expecting Europe. Get real about where we currently are. We’ve been set back to 2002 by the former regime and manager.

Forever.

Manager for life.

It's what the Chairman for Life would have wanted.

Fair play to the Friedkins. They did promise to adhere to and honour the traditions of Everton Football Club Museum Limited.
They obviously all got round a table and said "Whenever we have a problem we say 'what would the Everton board do because they always get it right"

I’m 33. Moyes has been the best manager in my lifetime by a considerable distance. Regularly in Europe (whereas before and after it’s been relegation fights), several trips to Wembley and most of the modern day icons have been from his tenure despite his budget restraints (baines, Cahill, Coleman for example).

Yeah, a bit of crap with how he left/after he left but a lot of that is also media garbage.

Feels a bit meh with all the hype around new owners and stadium but for me, he has shown that he is a decent manager and I fully expect he keeps us up and gets us playing some half decent football. This squad isn’t as bad as some make out and he will add a couple of shrewd signings I’m sure.
