Only players under 24 would be great let’s hope that happens and we add pace

Think I put up during the summer, nearly the entirety of our permanent transfers that actually took money have been on players 24 or under, the older players have either been frees, nominal fees or loans (Young, Gueye, Tarkowski, Harrison, Danjuma)

Only exception to that rule seems to be Beto - who I think was an exception due to the DCL fitness worries and him literally being the only player we could get in on the buy now pay later deal.

Rest of the permanent desks seem to be targeting 24 or younger

Ndiaye, Tim, Garner, Chermiti, O'Brien, McNeil, - all 24 or younger when we bought them. Both Broja and Lindstrom who we have prearranged fees for are 24 or younger also.

So we do seem to have a policy of only paying money out on you get players and using loans and frees on older players - so maximising resale and minimising sunk cost.

Idea would be for Longstaff and DCL to be swapped for decent fees even though they have 6 months left on contracts, both good returns for PSR and would help us sign players this winter.

We can still sign other players with higher potential.

Although not exciting he’s a solid PL player and would be a good squad option.
Disagree he’s decent but know better than what we have, if Newcastle want dcl
They can buy and we can look elsewhere, I understand us getting Tim from Vila for 10mil low wages and potential to improve. Longstaff and a 27 will want a decent wage and a 3yr deal minimum, not sure how that helps us from a PSR point of view

I think I read we haven’t paid big money under Thelwell for anybody over 26?? Not sure how true that is

Sadly I think he maybe a bit of a crock though, I read something about his injury the other day and it was saying that he has a crack in his foot but its not a full break, that's a real pain in the arse injury as you are literally waiting or it to break properly so you then do proper rehab, don't expect him back anytime soon imo.

It helps because Calvert-Lewin cost us peanuts, so his book value is next to nothing. If we get a transfer fee say of £15m in a deal with Longstaff coming the other way, the Longstaff PSR value is worked out across the duration of his contract. So we’d probably end up around £10m better off in PSR terms. This would give us useful wriggle room to do some other deals. And is also preferable to Calvert-Lewin leaving for nothing in the summer.

Im a bit concerned with the profile of the Longstaff link - however if we go down a route of signing players sub 24 or younger we really need to be patient, this is a profile of player we have really struggled to develop here, generally opting for established players elsewhere. Our recent history is littered with players we have struggled to bring to the top, Kean, Robinson, Lookman, Vlasic, Gordon to name a few.

We've been that bit better of late and under Thelwell with Garner, Branthwaite, Tim and Broja. Though we still have one of, if not the oldest squad in the league,.

But if we go with mostly under 24's we need to be patient and nurture these players to develop.

Looking at the success Forest has had this season there is a core of progression in MGW, Elagna and CHO - that's kicked them on after a couple of years of bringing them along and being relatively patient with them.

I know how it works, was more about im
Not sure it’s a great deal for us. We’re basically only getting longstaff so they will give us 15 million for DCL.
I’d be surprised if he goes there, his mrs doesn’t want to go to Newcastle,
She wants London or abroad, a pre contact in Italy would be my guess.

If we can get 15mil for dcl in January, fantastic bite their hands off, but let’s not compound it by wasting it on longstaff, let’s go and actually scout some talent. Instead of the usual , he’s played for Newcastle a 100 times, he’s got prem experience, he wil do a job.

But Newcastle will only give us that for DCL is we pay that for Longstaff in return.

I see the silly season panic over potential signings has already begun.

I suppose Longstaff makes a change from some of the usual names thrown about and based on all the usual reliable sources...
