We have struggled to consistently score goals ever since we lost Lukaku, it's an absolutely enormous problem that the club just hasn't been able to solve.

This is a mighty fine point buddy and I for one would like to know if some in this thread might have advocated for “driving Lukaku to Old Trafford myself” and “we will just spread the goals around” before we sold our guaranteed 20 goals a season striker some years ago and been hamstrung since.

I was there was a way of going back to old posts and checking this, really do.

His presser should be interesting today

"so Sean have you spoken to the new owners?"

"Not yet No, I think they will probably want to get the feel of the place 1st"

"Are you concerned that they have not spoken to you?"

"Not really no, as my record speaks for itself, not many teams can go to Arsenal away and put in a performance like that"

ooooooo Tik Tok Sean 😉

That was an issue before Lukaku as well though. Had a few flash in the pan season like yakubu and Saha once got 15, but generally our top scorer ends on around 10-12.

Since 2000, our top scorer has only scored more than 12, 9 times. 4 of those were Lukaku, 2 of them DCL.

Last 2 seasons have been our worst in that period but there are a handful of other years with less than 10 as well.

Lukaku is an outlier as a standard of striker for our club since the PL began, while id love to get another like him, we were never replacing his goals

Sack Him...

With the January window, coming up. It is the right time to change manager. If the right man is available. But it's an awful window to do good business.
The DOF is more important, to plan for the summer. This summer is arguably one of the biggest for decades.

Oh yeah Lukaku himself is an outlier but under Moyes we tended to have a number of different options who chipped in rather than one dominant goalscorer. We scored at least 50 goals in 10 of the last 11 seasons before Lukaku left, but have only done it once in the 6 (might as well call it 7 now) seasons since. I don't necessarily mean we need to replace Lukaku as an individual, but the problem effectively started when he left and we haven't found a way to fix it. I was saying in another thread the other day, our attacking players have scored 139 PL goals between the lot of them in almost a thousand games, their records just don't really support the idea that they'd score loads more under a different manager. Obviously some of them haven't played that many PL games but even looking at their records in other top leagues they aren't much better, Lindstrom got none in Italy and Ndiaye 4 in France. We really need significantly better quality in order to improve in that area.

It's always good to have many options and not relying on a striker scoring 1/3 of the goals.

For me the DCL under Ancelotti debate is a bit like the Dyche got Burnley into Europe once. It happend once(2 in 8 seasons or so. The majority was relegation battle or in case of DCL he hit on average 8 goals a season. For a starting striker that's low.
