On the conversation of DoFs

We've had 3.

Each one of them absolutely 100% abysmal as the other. Wasted millions upon millions upon millions time and time and time again

Maybe 4th time lucky.

Director of Football isn't the issue.

The issue Everton have had with the role of DoF is outside influences like Kenwright, Moshiri and Agent "Pals" of theirs.

Once the Takeover is done, IF Thelwell is staying in the role which I don't think he will, The Friedkin Group will have a professional CEO and board who will monitor the DoF and they will have a higher standard of practice then that last shower.

TFG seemingly take a back seat with stuff so I doubt you will have Dan/Ryan doing Kenwright things like giving his opinions on certain players and wanting the final say.

Maybe now having learnt their lesson from Roma, but I can’t see their appointment of Mourinho as anything other than an owner sanctioned statement / vanity project.
Worked in the short term of course.

Thelwell's position is a bit awkward in the timing if any change was to be made.

Either they decide to stick with him at least for the medium term, or they have to get rid soon.

If they'll be changing managers then it makes no sense to do that first and then get rid of Thelwell.

The DoF should have input in the choice of manager and when that doesn't happen then it puts the cart before the horse and that just leads to bad decisions and wasted money.

I think they'll decide to keep him on a while.

It needs to come from the DoF though, whether that's Thelwell or someone else otherwise we will just end up in the same cycle again.

The more I hear about what was going on behind the scenes during Brands' tenure here, the more it's evident that he simply wasn't allowed to do his job properly. Wasted opportunity that for me.

That sounds like a plan.;)

I think there’s a few points on this. It was a bonkers environment and you had BK, Mosh and Brands all pulling in different directions. However, he took Moshiri’s cash and didn’t walk away until the wheels came off despite the fact he must have known it was a car crash so my sympathy is somewhat lessened due to that.

If we have a CEO/DoF model they must be allowed absolute autonomy to recruit players and coaching staff etc. Then the chain of accountability is clear.

Putting a few things to the side, is it fair to say that perhaps DOFs can be judged on:

A: Transfers in/out
B: Appointing managers
C: Youth development
D: PSR and other regulations

With us having so many cooks (Owner, CEO, Manager) interfering with DOFs...Newcastle seemingly having similar issues and United going off piste alot...and Brighton perhaps being run like an analytical computer game;

Is it possible that this is why DOFs typically arent successful in England?

Left to their own devices in Europe and given time they are able to build something if theyre good...in England it seems like an entirely different mandate aside from clubs like City and Villa who both have elite managers.

I said ages ago that the DOF model will eat itself. I stand by that. The logic behind it is good, it gives you some continuity blah blah. Does it though? In this day and age when everything and everybody is open to scrutiny? I mean we're on our third in less than ten years. It could well be a fourth soon. Does it just add to the mess if things aren't going well? Does a scenario of three directors of Football, each appointing a couple of managers over a 10 year period sound like it's a solid plan?

When you do see it work at clubs, the same old things that predate DOF's - like recruiting well and having a good manager - still matter much, much more than having somebody in a role just because it supposedly brings guaranteed stability.
