….the railway gauge in US of 4ft 8.5in is based entirely on the British equivalent because their railroads were originally designed by British engineers. The rather odd measurement is the width between the wheels of the Roman war Chariots that rutted the English roads. The Space Shuttle rocket boosters had the same width so they could fit through the railway tunnel en route to their site.
