FA Cup Replays

The FA have made a further statement given the wholesale negative reaction*. It is rather disingenuous and claims that the clubs had all agreed that the loss of replays was "inevitable". Note that inevitability and agreement are two different things.
* The Football Supporters Association, claiming to represent all football fans have made their feelings known to the FA but it is a very limp statement and required much more imo. It's all a bit "Down with this sort of thing".

Thought I'd start a specific thread.

The torrent of disgust expressed throughout the Football League, and Non League, regarding the proposed ditching of replays, notwithstanding the Final now not being the final game of the season, is wholly justified. To misquote Oscar Wilde : the Premier League knows the price of everything, and the value of nothing. The oligarchy running football should just bugger off.

Just a couple of statements, amongst many made today.

Agreed. Absolutely, the current football governance need binning off. They are so focused on money and europe they completely misread what the vast majority of clubs and fans want.

Everything is about this super league, the threat over psr keeps the non 6 clubs down , the fa cup replays binned gives them more fixtures, the next will be 18 teams in the league.

Why don’t they name the clubs involved who they consulted with. Only one club that continually moans about the amount of games they play.
Whatever happens they will never take away the memories of a 13 year-old boy, an Evertonian for only 3 years, who watched his beloved Blues come from 0-2 to beat Sheffield Wednesday 3-2 on TV in his Wednesday-supporting schoolfriend's house before running, full-pelt, home in time to see Brian Labone lift the FA Cup triumphantly and the parading of it with the team around the real Wembley stadium.

That's what 1966 means to me because I am an Evertonian first, and England fan second.

Bringing a new meaning to 'consultation ' and 'agreement.'

EFL "marginalised" over FA Cup replays decision
More developments on the big story about FA Cup replays being abolished. The EFL have responded on Friday afternoon with the following statement.

“The EFL wishes to clarify further its position in respect of yesterday’s Premier League and Football Association bi-lateral announcement over the removal of FA Cup replays and the role of the League’s representatives on the Professional Game Board (PGB).

“The agreement which now sees the abolition of replays from the competition format was agreed solely between the Premier League and FA. Ahead of the deal being announced there was no agreement with the EFL nor was there any formal consultation with EFL Clubs as members of the FA and participants in the competition.

“In September 2023, the EFL did initially discuss with Clubs potential changes to the FA Cup format but only as part of a wider and more fundamental change to financial distributions. As is now clear, there has been no movement in this area since September.

“This latest agreement between the Premier League and the FA, in the absence of financial reform, is just a further example of how the EFL and its Clubs are being marginalised in favour of others further up the pyramid and that only serves to threaten the future of the English game.

“The EFL today calls on both the Premier League and the FA, as the Governing body, to re-evaluate their approach to their footballing partnership with the EFL and engage more collaboratively on issues directly affecting our Clubs.

“A separate issue is the role of the EFL representatives on the Professional Game Board (PGB) in agreeing to the 2024/25 overall fixture calendar. PGB is there to make technical decisions across the game as opposed to key policy decisions such as competition changes or formats.

“Any decisions taken on the calendar involving EFL representatives are in no way an endorsement of the joint deal agreed between the FA and Premier League that imposes changes to the FA Cup competition format in isolation.

“As part of the discussions the EFL representatives did challenge the position and were told that Clubs would be comfortable with no replays. They were effectively advised that, as a result, of it being an FA competition, the fixture list needed to be agreed as presented. It is also important to note that this matter was not discussed by the FA Cup committee, a separate group that oversees the competition across the professional and national game.”

And yet, more champions league games next year.

Lee’s have it right, this isn’t about game numbers, the PL and FA simply don’t give a flying one about any team outside of 3 or 4 in the PL.

Like others, I don’t think it will be long before I jib footy completely. A soulless, corporate enterprise.

Been a really interesting 48-hours; some things I'd forgotten about refreshed in my memory and to be honest; it's a sickener to be honest.

Cray Valley PM who took Charlton to a replay are second in their league now; whether it's linked to FA Cup money, who knows? But it's certainly telling that they're second to Ramsgate; who reached the second round of the cup this season.

Cambridge United took Man Utd to a replay in 2015; infront of 74,000 fans; the club would uave received enough in that game to be sustainable for at least one season.

Chesterfield got a replay away to West Brom in 2023; there are so many more.

Football in this country was built for everyone, it's got 150 years of history behind it which it seems 20-Billionaires and greedy business owners are intent on dismantling.

Where does it end? Does it go to US-style franchising with no promotioN, relegation or cups? I'm struggling to see where ir ends?

All to protect a few teams and cause chaos amongst the rest.

We should just let them have the super league at this point. Then they can have this. The football pyramid and FA cup can then be left alone for the rest of us. Football is still hugely popular down the leagues and we will still fill our ground. It'll take an initial financial hit but I think it'll recover.
