The red is down to the guidelines given for serious foul play or endangering an opponent. It was not serious foul play but you may make an argument that the studs being up were endangering an opponent under the guidelines. However, anyone who has ever played the game knows full well that there was no deliberate attempt to do that. At worst it was a yellow, at best it was "play on". It's utterly bewildering.

His studs are only ‘up’ because he’s flat in his a**e. Genuine attempt to win the ball. No one on the field thought it was even a foul- he doesn’t actually catch the player

I don’t see how they can overturn it when VAR recommend it and the ref goes to re-watch it. It would be proving they don’t know their arse from their elbow.
