2023/24 Nathan Patterson

Don't think he is going anywhere.
He is young still learning the game, and let's face it it hasn't been ideal bringing anybody in over the last few seasons because virtually every game has been a high pressure one.
Make a mistake and it could help relegate us, that's some pressure on an inexperienced player.
Needs to improve but looks in my opinion to have something about him that's worth sticking with.

I don't know why your post is being questioned since you made it. It's spot on.

Take a look at his positioning on that chance Burnley had first half where Godfrey slides in to the rescue at the far post and sweeps the ball to safety: Patterson is a spectator to it. 10 yards away (with no Burnley player to mark himself) he looks on as a spectator and is forced to just marvel at the clearance and clap Godfrey.

Now, some will say "well, that was Godfrey's job as one of three CBs to be there and do that" but had he been caught further upfield or was blocked or slipped it was Patterson's (as said, not marking anyone himself) to be a lot closer to that Burnley player to get the challenge in that Godfrey did. The Burnley forward should have been crowded out of that chance but it took Godfrey's excellent sweeping last ditch challenge to save the day.

THAT is what gives anyone with half a clue why Patterson still gives cause for concern. That's why I always say that he cant be left to play in a 4 man defence. If we had yesterday that'd have been Burnley back in the game.
Not a chance is that pattersons fault.

Watch the chance. It’s Godfreys man and Godfrey fell asleep and let him go. Fantastic recovery but as the balls coming forward, Patterson is covering the winger as he should be.

In the still above, it is quite clearly Godfreys man.

The reason Patterson is further is out is evident in this still as you can then see the winger, who ultimately didn’t bust a gut to join the attack as you would expect him to.

£16m with bonuses linked to us staying in the league so that's another 2 or 3. Then a 5yr contract at £70k a week. For a raw kid from poor league it was financial recklessness on speed.
Cut the lies. You have been called out on this multiple times.

It was 12m with add ons. Not 16 with add ons. And you have zero idea if they were linked to us staying in the league. We hadn’t been in a relegation scrap when he signed (most recent league finish was 10th) so it’s more likely the add ons where on European qualification.

No evidence anywhere of being on 70k.

Personally would play Paterson for development, think he’s potentially a very good player, although obviously not the finished article.

What he really needs to cut out his game are the risks on the ball in the defensive third of the pitch. That Cruyff turn when he was the last man yesterday and lost the ball, that’s the kind of thing that Dyche won’t stand for. That’s inexperience though and the kind of thing game time will improve, decision making when to play when not to.

The thing for all our defenders this season is that they are looking better because the midfield is working so hard to protect them, it’s so much easier to defend. We’ve been so open in midfield the last few seasons. much better conditions to put a young player in the team.

Imagine making up lies to win an argument on the internet.

Thanks for posting that. It is EXACTLY the positioning that hands supporters nightmares when he's in the team. A spectator at the far post.

It's also exactly the reason that Coleman gets a starting place when fit again. He is very good at making sure he's there at the back post to scramble stuff away.

A loan for the lad is the difference between spending 10 million on a back up or a 20 mill or on another potentially starting right full in the summer.

What Nathan needs is what Jarrod got last year, would six months at somewhere like PSV be all that bad for him, compared to the risk of being left on the shelf here developmentally in the second half of the season.

Patto ramming the jibes and brickbats down the haters throats - you love to see it.

The kid needs games, and yes he will make mistakes, but let’s give him a chance.

Stop the agenda and support the kid when he does play. He can’t be loaned out because we’ve got two pensioners as the other starting options.
I am not sure he will necessarily make more mistakes than any of our other defenders bar Tarkowski and Branthwaite.
