Dyche basically said in that interview that he wouldn't comment on specific targets until they were basically done, which was why he was fine to talk about Chermiti.
Then the journalist asked him about Ekitike being accepted and he smirked and denied it. Considering the line of question you'd expect he'd have denied any name the journalist brought up.
Basically I wouldn't read too much into his answer.

I suspect it will be Dyche against this, wanting an inferior senior forward as befits his MO. According to Bobble, Ekitike was already on our list of targets, so Thelwell can't be too against it.

The 6ft 3in forward has committed to the Toffees for four years, with his contract set to expire in June 2027. Chelsea have still not given up on signing the Ecuador international, but if he ends up at Liverpool then Belgium international Onana is considered a viable alternative at Stamford Bridge.
Sean Dyche decided not to sign midfielder Ross Barkley for Everton because he isn’t the sort of player he wants in his team, according to Paul Brown. Speaking to GiveMeSport on 10 August, the former Daily Star journalist said the 29-year-old would’ve had a “rough ride” if he made the move back to Goodison Park.
West Ham United forward Michail Antonio has now said that he is not close to joining Everton at the moment. The 33-year-old centre-forward has been linked with a move to Goodison Park throughout the summer as Sean Dyche looks to strengthen his attacking options.
However, Antonio has now revealed that there is currently ‘nothing solid’ with regards to a departure from the London Stadium. Speaking on the BBC’s The Footballer’s Football Podcast, the forward clarified the current situation in relation to the transfer rumours.
