Find me a footballer that isn't better at 22 than they were at 18. In the youth team your role isn't defined, you may still be growing faster than your body can adapt to the demands of elite sport, you might get into carlsberg and tabs. Only elite talents that can contribute to a team immediately are getting that kind of fee at that age.

Barkley was great at17-19 but went backwards by the age of 22 …

I'd wager you were completely wrong.
Proving yourself at the highest level is the most important thing to 99% of any player.

Why don't they just chose Rangers or Celtic if European competitions are the top of a players ambitions..

( And if you prove yourself at Everton or Forest then it won't be long before a big 6 team signs you and you're playing those competitions !!! )

Ummm no. It’s almost certainly money first for most these days. It’s a mercenary game for most now. If we offered a big enough package that probably would’ve swayed it as well.

And please educate me more…In the past 20 years how many players have moved from sporting to big clubs in big leagues compared to Everton and Forest?
