TV Series

I don't think it is or even anywhere near it. I think there are dozens of series that have a lot more nudity and explicit sex than this. Anybody watching it for pure titillation will no doubt enjoy the frequent shots of Depp's boobs and the skimpy clothing she wears throughout, but that's about the extent of the nudity.

What I will say is that the controlling nature of the sex/nudity scenes does make for a very uncomfortable watch, which is the main reason I raised the question a couple of pages ago. This "controlling" theme is what underpins the whole storyline and I think it would be very difficult to tell this story without the nudity and sex scenes. In that regard I don't believe them to be at all gratuitous. But I could fully understand why anybody would want to turn off.

There's no denying that Lily-Rose Depp is stunningly pretty and overall I think she's doing a pretty good job of a very challenging part. Very brave of her to take it on and also very brave of the producers to make a show focusing on such a taboo subject. Sadly it's incredibly believable.

Shows like The Girlfriend Experience and Vida have 10000 times more nudity and sex. This is more just awkward, as you say - it's not very sexy

I remember watching shows like Rome and Tudors back in the day thinking they were porn.
Well they were 2 in my head when I said it. Also the likes of GOT, Spartacus, The Deuce and even recent shows like Normal People, Obsession and Lady Chatterley were far more explicit than The idol.

Having said that The Idol is a much more uncomfortable watch but that's down to the subject matter.

At the start of the year I vowed to watch those three classics, none of which I'd seen before.

All done now. Each is rewarding in it's own way.

I'd simply counsel anyone not to watch The Sopranos without breaks. It gets right into your head and can become an obsession.
Yeah that’s definitely the thing I need to work on, I can become a couch potato when I start to get absorbed to the annoyance of my wife. I’ve started to stay on the treadmill for an hour walking as opposed to doing shorter runs, it afford me time to watch an episode here and there. I’m half way through S3 of The Wire now….so far not quite as good as S2 which for me, has been the best one so far. Good through.

I remember watching Lonesome dove when it was aired years ago ( still one of the best western mini series ever), I bought the dvd lent it to a friend and never got it back. Well I was just going through the draw with all our DVD’s in where I found a box set of said mini series unopened, I’d forgot my daughter bought it for me when I lost the original one. A great series and one I’m looking forward to watching again.

This, I never watched sopranos when it used to come on TV back in the day but someone bought me the box set and I started to watch 4 or 5 episodes a night after work, so addictive

Just finished 'The Days' on Netflix. Its impossible not to have Chernobyl in mind as you watch it, and its not terrible but it comes up severely lacking.

Its too long, its quite convoluted so you get this weird experience of not really having a clear picture of whats happening, but at the same time having screamingly obvious stuff over-explained. There's a few good performances but some of the acting is very clunky.
All of the bigwigs and politicians come across as ranting, unreasonable megalomaniacs, which I find a bit unlikely.

Also, I remember being stunned at the time that no-one was killed at the Fukushima plant during the quake and tsunami, or indeed during the battle to get it under control. However, the makers have decided to portray the deaths of two seemingly created workers. You could argue they were a proxy, but they don't then do anything much with the affected family, so it just feels very manipulative.
However many 100s of evacuees did die in the grim winter aftermath in poor shelter by many accounts, mostly from the area around Fukushima, and that isn't touched on, there's no real sense of the wider impact.

Missed opportunity and not one to recommend sadly. Shame because there's probably a riveting drama to be made, its just this isn't it.

Dunno if its been mentioned, but you've got that Hatfields & McCoys 'mini series' if you haven't seen it yet..

I've watched 3 episodes of the latest Black Mirror season. While they each have their bright spots, I'd put none of them into the same category as the heyday of the first 7 to 10 shows

The latest season was so unnecessary, I wonder if it was in their contract to do it as I can't see why they bothered
