I am not sure if you are arguing for or against Tom Davies.
Playing in twenty games in any season is substantial for any squad player and he was injured for a number of games as well.
Nobody suggested he was first choice and of course other players were signed unless you thought Davies was going to play in midfield on his own.
Everton club needs probably five or even six central midfielders to get through a season..... that is why he is being offered the contract.
If the club wants to offer him a new contract, any criticism or support of that decision needs to be directed at the club and those within who have made the decision to offer him the new contract. My point around other players being signed was that he was constantly overlooked as first choice, so managers couldn’t have been that arsed with him. Its just a lazy decision to offer a squad member a new contract and it means one less transfer to have to work on.

In terms of Tom himself, any criticism of Tom from me would be, that if he takes our revised terms he is purely more about the money than fulfilling whatever potential he has as a footballer. If we were winning things and getting medals I could understand it a little, but we are not, so he could have another 10 years of actually being a footballer.

The general consensus on here appears to be that it was an incorrect decision to offer Tom a new contract. I would agree with that view. I hope that clarifies.

I'd not get bent out of shape over this, we recently took up the 12 month option on Doucoure, and Gana has 12 months left also. Garner is only 12 months in, and Gomes who has 12 months left is likely sold very soon. Add in carrying Alli in some form for 12 months, and suddenly having someone dependable although no world star suddenly makes sense at a time of such clear upheaval. Mina's done, Begovic gone, Townsend appears retired, then there's the players clearly not fan favourites, Maupay, Keane, Mykolenko, Holgate. Palace went through a massive overhaul last summer in one go, didn't get it right and it cost Vieira eventually. It's a patchwork squad we have and praying we keep our best eleven fit and suspension free all season is a huge gamble. P&S is still hanging over us, there are no huge funds to rework the side, we're papering over the cracks and trying to get to BMD hoping it is our salvation.

We ended up here because of martinez, allardyce, koeman, and to a lesser extent Silva. Believe it or not, benitez gets a pass as he hardly spent anything, besides the digne money, which is looking more and more like good value as time goes on. Reminiscent of the penniless late 90's with a poor squad and endless disappointments.

We spent the Digne money on Mykolenko, Van der Berk and Alli. 2 still here, both not in the plans.

Those opinions are all reasonable..
There is of course the chance that Tom Davies is not motivated by money alone, he strikes me as being a bit different to the average footballer, he seems to like a low key life and the only unusual thing about him is his weird taste in clothes (in my opinion).
He may just want to play for HIS club as his uncle did.

In my opinion Tom Davies is not even close to being as bad as some here suggest.

I think he is a more than useful squad member.

The last thing I would use as a guide of a footballer is the consensus here.

Mykolenko and Patterson. Donny was a short loan. Alli was some sort of never before or since heard of loan-buy staged pay deal that'll go down in history alongside his career as a monumental waste.

you don’t need to use here as a guide

what he does on the pitch shows us he’s cow poo

Yeah I get that…no way I would do that I use my own eyes. I think Tom also suffers from being local and being a bit of a future superstar when he broke through so there is always going to be a view of him by some through that lens. I just think he’s not effective even as a squad player which is why I would not have offered him a new contract.

Any money offered to Davies should have gone toward another year for Mina. Getting ten games from him is way more valuable than having Davies fit all season (and btw he’s also had a lot of injuries)

oh mate please lol and thankyou
Y'know, if @GrandOldTeam agrees to make a special player thread for next season I'll happily sponsor it. @AndyC could include you in motm polls as a protest vote when they've all been so abysmal and there's no one worthy of the vote.

Might be a bit of silly light relief we need when we see Tom Davies warming up. GET MATTY ON!

😆

Sign the contract Tom and let the heads fall off.
I mean this is equally as stupid a post, you want him to sign just for heads to fall off, enough have fell off the last 2 seasons if we’re to move forward then players like Davies if we can’t sell then we shouldn’t be renewing their contracts, if it’s on a year extension not as hard to swallow while in transition and skint but a new contract Jesus the thought of him here for another 3/5 years is mad he’s played far too many games already.

I get your logic, but other teams will probably offer him similar. Relatively speaking, he is on a low wage and most championship teams would offer him similar. The question is whether he would want to play regularly.
How much is he on? I’d of thought around 40k no way is he getting that in the championship.
