If someone is stupid enough to take Keane or Holgate I wouldn't be surprised if he came back, but it sounds like we have a limited budget and even with Mina and Coady leaving we have 4 senior CB's as well as Branthwaite coming back. We need goals, and creativity - that has to be the priority.
100% correct. We'll be stuck with Keane, Godfrey and Holgate and the last thing Dyche is going to want is our limited budget being partially used to bring in yet another center back, who I don't think Dyche even really rates anyway tbf.

I really don't get the agenda against Keane. Scored in our 3-2 comeback against Palace, scored a screamer against Spurs, assisted Mina in the final minute at Molineux

He is a centre half with poor positioning , ball watches far more than a premier League defender should do, falls over the ball under no pressure enough times to it be a concern to name just a few issues with him. He is not a premier League defender and if he was linked with us this summer, no fan would want him here.

4.5m for Coady is decent money, but I agree that whilst we have Keane and Holgate on the books buying another CB when we have limited budget is unrealistic. What is also unrealistic is someone is going to buy Keane and Holgate when they know they can buy Coady for 4.5m! We're snookered

The trouble is that we know Keane and Holgate aren't up to it - if they're playing, it's almost certain that the opposition will score against us. I suspect that Dyche will borrow a younger centre back to partner Tarakowski, maybe introducing Branthwaite gradually.

They're both rubbish and we'd all take Coady over both of them, but if no one wants to buy them and/or they do not want to leave, then I could see why Dyche might not want yet another CB on the books when he's said numerous times the squad is unbalanced as it is.

For all the Dyche-love doing the rounds, I want to see if he's learned anything from last season or if he reverts straight back to putting MK alongside Tarks as his first choice center backs, no matter how many points it costs.

We were 100% correct in not spending 4.5 mil on him. We can't keep wasting money on older players on bigger wages. Coady is a good lad, a good presence in the dressing room but he was out of the team for most of Dyche's time for good reason. I'm glad he slotted into the back 3 on the last day and signed off on a good game. When he moves on to coaching I'd sound him out and see if fancies coming back.

If people think competent player decisions can be made while the same board exists, its willful ignorance. Theyve been incompetent for decades. On the face of it it seems a poor decision, as who in their right mind would prefer Holgate to come on over Coady? Saying we have 4 CBs is pretending Holgate is one.

That said, I can see one way this decision makes sense. If they plan to bring Branthwaite back AND sign a top CB, so that Branthwaite now acts as the #3 CB, then it doesnt make sense to keep Coady. He would at best be a #4 and even the cutrate price would be surplus.

Totally agree, nothing special just a decent but aging CB who seems like someone you need around the dressing room.

Go and find a Coady in another league who is 5 years younger but with similar attributes, these players are there if you have a good scouting network.

Genuinely yes. For better or worse they're here. What we have to pay them is a sunk cost. We can control wasting more money and we should stop doing it. We're poor. 4.5m matters.
I don't think you understand what a sunk cost fallacy means. It means specifically what you were referring to that we should not continue to play them just because we have them on the books. It's like justifying buying a car at $10,000 and having to put in $2,000 into the car every 6 months. But you don't get a new one because you think to yourself. Oh I've already spent that $10,000. in repairs and you just constantly go way past with the value of the car is. It is not mean we need to stick with what we have.

Yeah it's not really an argument I'm interested in having. The point is really just that if your justification for signing Coady has to reference Holgate you're looking at it wrong.
