In some instances, yes, but not this one. So basically, if someone is in the 6 yard box on an angle, a keeper should just leave a massive space, as long as he's guarding his near post? This could often present a near open goal for the attacker.

If the players scores in the far corner then it’s a good finish, but a keeper should stop the playing scoring at his near post most of the time. You make out I’m saying, don’t come out, stand on your post and guard it, that’s you putting words into my mouth.

What I’m saying is if Pickford wants to run out his goal and close the angle then he needs to be doing a better job and saving the shots which are quite near to him and constantly beating him at his near post.



Closes the gap. Tries to dive and save a near post effort. Goes under his body and in.



Villa. Runs out, doesn’t know where he is, doesn’t cover his near post. Goes flat and player scores.

Same happened for Arsenals second yesterday. It’s poor I’m afraid.

I agree with the Ronaldo one, that kinda epitomises the "don't get beat at you near post", saying, it is poor keeping, but not the others.
 


Don’t get beat at your near post is a bit of a fallacy at times.

Yes, it’s soft goalkeeping if you let one near post at a saveable height. Or from distance.

But if someone smashes it at you roof of the net from 8 yards out, there’s really not much you can do. Aguero scored about 100 goals doing that. They can’t all be goalkeeping mistakes.

Let’s look at the horrendous defending first.
