Excellent point.

This idea that if we lose on Saturday we are down is absurd.

Of course relegation will become highly probable if we lose on Saturday because Leeds will then be four points clear of us and we obviously won't have the crowd behind us during the away games at Arsenal, Forest and Chelsea.

However, we were in a worse position with just a few games to go last season.

And we've shown that with the crowd right behind us at Goodison we can beat anyone, even the team that's top of the league.
We had richalison and Calvert lewin then though and a Gordon purple patch who in that team realistically can you see stepping up to score ?

Yes, this is the prescient point here. While it is true that defeat on Saturday does not mathematically relegate us - far from it with, what, 15 matches to play afterwards - anybody thinking we can absorb yet another home loss to a direct rival and expect to survive is utterly deluded. We got out last year because we had players like Richarlison to come up with the goods and because Burnley were feeble. This time, we have no Richarlison - and worse, no forward worth the name to replace him - and so defeat now would be worse than even the loss at Burnley last season. That could be attributed to mad tactics by a useless manager. Defeat to this Leeds side is likely to be because we simply cannot match them for goals. Tactics are rectifiable. A lack of goals is a much harder issue to fix.

Make no mistake: we have to win on Saturday to give ourselves a better than even chance of staying up. Anything less and we should expect to drop even if we have a significant part of the season to play.

Yep. It’s not just about 3 points for them or us, or x points ahead or behind with loads of games left. It’s momentum, confidence and pressure.

Newcastle romped away from danger last year because wins lead to more wins. We simply have to stop losing to the weaker teams in the league. Win is worth more than the points.

And if you insist on losing to all of your direct rivals at home, where exactly are you picking up these mythical survival points?

We might have the odd surprise win (such as against Arsenal), but if our direct rivals this season are Leeds, Forest, Southampton, Wolves, and Bournemouth and you haven't beaten any of those at home, well, surprise wins are really not going to compensate.

Saturday is a weather vane. Start to prepare for the worst if we do not win.

It's all good though lads because Dychy said everybody was making lots of phone calls on transfer deadline day, so at least we have a session highlight to look forward to when we get relegated. xG of 6.5 calls per hour.
He’s only been here ten minutes and this is the biggest opportunity of his career which he’s being paid millions of pounds a year to enjoy, he’s hardly going to come out in public and slam the board is he?

Shambles if Leeds hire Harry "King of the Jungle" Redknapp to be their manager in 2023, but I guess stranger things have happened??
Was on the radio this morning and says he has no idea where this has started from. He has a number of horses running at Cheltenham and other places coming over the next few weeks so is tied up with that at the moment.

I was workin it out this week if we get 9 out of the next 4 games wich is a big ask it still only puts us on 27 points it hit me just ow short we are so far this season

No but it's just really funny that that's the highlight of our transfer window that ultimately decided our fate: making loads of phone calls. haha.

Yup, we have zero margin for error thanks to the self-immolating loyalty to and deluded faith shown in Lampard. The next five games will, more or less, decide our fate. In that run, only the Arsenal game is an expected defeat. The other games - at home to Leeds, Villa, and Brentford - must return a minimum of 7 points. The away game at Forest must not be lost.

If we take 8 points from those 5 games, we have a chance. But we can't dip behind that, really, and truly hope to stay up. It's time to get off the pot for Everton.

If we could beat Leeds and Forest, that would be even better, even if it means only drawing with Villa and Brentford.
