Seiko Alpinist models (no so much the new retro-inspired ones; look for the ones with the "cathedral" handset) are about as "no-brainer" as you can get, IMHO...especially as a gift for a non watch person. Fits almost any scenario, it's a classic good'un for well under a grand and has plenty of colour options.

I really like the new "Land Turtles" too (posted mine)...great price for a Seiko with a Sapphire crystal.

That is very nice.

I've seen a few recommendations for Christopher Ward watches in this thread. I've been looking at the C60 Elite 1000 or the C60 Trident Pro 300. Can anyone recommend either or suggest an alternative?

I’ve got a C60 trident. Really good build quality and a lot of watch for the money. Longines Hydro-conquest or Rado Captain Cook are around the same sort of price points but you won’t be disappointed going down the CW route ?

Anyone used this discovery Japan mall for a discount timepiece?

I like the look of some G Shocks they have but I'm unsure on shipping / import taxes
