Chances are Kyrie gets offended at nothing and leaves in a bit anyway.

I can see the type of player that Kyrie is on paper and how it's worked well for him - yeah, he's a fantastic player and he doesn't demand the ball and can play offball... but it's also controversial antivax etc. etc. etc. Kyrie.

Who are the serviceable pieces around him tho? This trade involved Markieff Moris apparently coming to Dallas and going out are Dinwiddie and DFS. So those 2 and picks in '27 and '29 for Narcissistic Brunson so that we can go "win now", as he might leave at the end of the season anyway.

At least in Texas he'll be 'one of the good ones' as an antivax antisemite I guess.
Just one pick and he's miles better than Brunson. They have a chance that didn't exist before and options going forward. This is the worst team in the league after their best player.

He is, but he's also Kyrie.

Options aren't really there if he just doesn't stay after 6 months, which is a real possibility - he's a FA this year.

It's not just one pick also.

Well it's one pick that matters. They could've up 45 seconds and I'd not really have minded. Those are pretty much worthless.

They have his rights so sign and trade is a possibility. As much as Kyrie has always been about weird stuff he's never put himself in a spot to not get paid. That matters.

I think what is undersold in this is how damn good Kyrie is and has been this season. He's an all star starter. He's scoring 27 on 48/37/88 with 5 rebounds and 5 assists. The upside of this team is winning the title behind those two elite offensive players and it was not that 24 hours ago. The price to get to that spot is relatively low.

I know the risks but I think they're worth taking.

It is also a contract year for him; I'm aware of all the pro-Kyrie copes but all those copes go back to him being himself. He is an all-star caliber player and we needed one for ages, but he's also not the answer to the "we have no proper big" problem. I suppose now we're off the pick and roll/pop with anyone and Doncic, probably, as Kyrie can also create his own shot a lot.

I also might be miffed because we've proper Everton'd so many FAs - it seems impossible for us to attract any stars, even if we have a lot of cap space and a future MVP/HoF. Is it that difficult for Dallas, or is our FO that inept?

I think it's that hard.

I just look at this as the Cavs model from the Warriors Cavs final years. Elite offensive player, Kyrie as the overqualified wing man, Wood the flawed but floor spacing big and whatever else you can patch together. The question is can Luka be that good? I think so.

It is to get 2-3x starter caliber players to make a big 3. I'm talking we've failed at getting every decent player we've apparently talked to, other than KP which was a huge gamble (and another "win now" move fwiw, just not a fan of those).

As an example - we've needed a good starter big and an all star guard/forward next to Luka for about since Luka's been here. Dwight Powell is still our C. We have WCS! And the unknown position of Porzingis who just forgot how to do rebounds, despite being a walking skyscraper. All failed moves imo.

Also if we look at the Warriors team from those matches (even though it's the obviously extreme example) - most are 'home grown' or smart trades that they recruited based on what they needed next to Curry when he was still young and they realised they've got a gem.
We saw Luka instantly, recognised greatness, and got him... Willie Caulie Stein and rookies that won't sniff the courts other than for garbage time. Brunson came good (which was unexpected as he forced himself into the team) and wanted money so we naturally replaced his role with no one.

Stuff like that kinda gets to me, a lot of happy clapping for average players because a manchild with the body of a gummy bear is doing mad sh*t every game.

The Warriors ability to develop everyone is unmatched. I'd take a fraction of it.

Tbh I don't think KP was win now. He was 24 when they made that trade. They were hoping he'd get healthy and partner Luka for a long time. He didn't stay healthy and wasn't willing or able to fit into a role next to Luka. Very much like this trade I think it's one you make every time based on the information you have at the time. Hopefully it goes better now.

The thing is we reportedly knew about him not being physically as fit, or a good fit next to Luka, but allegedly thought it'd work out as he had time. Plus gave him a fat contract while he was training for his Ivan Drago cosplay

And it was a win now move, or rather a win next year cuz of injuries etc.
Just turned out 10 ft man can't rebound, which was laughable, and is still fragile. Also Carlisle got too full of himself apparently/sadly.

And yeah Warriors is, as I said, an extreme example as they seem to just create greatness currently, but it also goes to show that they're looking for the entire team and put faith in players, not just "him good, he do good next to Luka" which seems to be our tactic lol and for the most part players that look good/great for them don't look as good anywhere else.

Gonna backfire spectacularly. Can’t wait.

I can't believe I'm saying this but people are somehow too down on Kyrie now. And he's done a lot to deserve it, but the Nets in are very likely a Finals team if he doesn't get hurt in 2021. That's not that long ago.

It would been better if Mavericks picked Bogdanovic from Pistons, veteran player and very good scorer (shooter) to help Luka. They asking for trouble with Irving.
