He did pass it backwards at one point then run forward in a straight line turn around and he looked surprised the ball wasn't near him.

His usual ploy is the sprint forwards with the ball vaguely under his control, then dramatically turn backwards to play the safe pass. And he's always delighted with how it wrongfoots the opposition. Fantastic player.
