Please tell me somebody else saw the news report on ITV on this? So, so bad it's hilarious.
Black Peters are companions of Sinterklass (Father Christmas) and for the most part portrayed by white Dutch people who have blacked up, wear curly haired wigs and have big red lips drawn on.

I did indeed just see that.

Weird.

Im not sure what I think of it.

On one hand it's just a tradition. And they are painted black to represent the going down the chimney. Not the slavery part of it.

But on the other hand. ITS BADLY RACIST.

The best bit was when they showed a succession of kids smiling their heads off blacked up while blacked up adults started playing the trumpet.

I presume they went down the chimney naked and then put their clothes on then as there is no soot on the clothes?

Still not racist though.

It's a bit racist to dress up as a ridiculous caricature of a people who've been persecuted for hundreds of years. It's also not a brilliant idea to have them then dance around and give impressionable children gifts and sweets. It's not the most important story in the world admittedly, but it is still racist.

I had a lecturer in college who told us this story, we thought he was pulling our legs at first. With it being mid 90's we had no internet on our phones to check out. In fact we had no mobiles.

He was an old school racist that teacher, i used to love winding him up. He blamed AIDS on Africans shagging monkeys.
