now you're gonna hear about it
International breaks are doldrums for the soccer football, but they can be good for the Ale House. I can only offer so much, but I thought i'd get us started with this. Pick one artist/musician/band/group/musical act, etc, and take us through 10 of their tracks. Not necessarily a top-10, and not necessarily a TED Talk, just guide us through 10 tracks that we should listen to.

Maybe we've done this before. Who cares?

I'll start with one of my favorites: Beastie Boys

10. 'Sure Shot', Ill Communication. This is probably their best track from their best album. It's hard to say what is "quintessential Beastie Boys," but this might be it.

9. 'Shadrach', Paul's Boutique. Some people say this is their best album or at least significantly under-appreciated for its innovation. Most have never listened to it. Give 'Shadrach' a spin.

8. 'Gratitude', Check Your Head. While 'Sabotage' is probably their most popular "rocky" song, this is the one I like.

7. 'Root Down', lll Communication. Maybe my favorite song, this "Free Zone mix" takes a good hip hop song and simplifies it to make it better. The original video is nice with its NYC touches, but give a listen here to the remix.

6. 'Intergalactic', Hello Nasty. A great album, a great song, a great robot invasion of Tokyo video. What's a better combination than this? (Beasties were fabulous with videos, this is maybe their best. Or maybe their second best. Or third best?) We dressed up our oldest son as this robot using a silver painted cardboard box for his first or second Halloween. He did not enjoy it.

5. 'Eggman', Paul's Boutique. I think this is a reprise of their hardcore song 'Egg Raid on Mojo.' If it's not, I can't be arsed looking it up. This song is fun, stupid, silly. This is Beasties. This is nice, enjoy.

4. 'So Watcha Want', Check Your Head. This is either a fabulous track full of teen/young-20's energy or Beastie Boys at their silliest. If you're a skeptic, skip the video below and watch them with The Roots a few years ago. The best thing Beasties had was an abundance of style, and it flows out of tracks like 'So Watcha Want.'

3. 'Flute Loop', Ill Communication. I have a lot of praise for this album, apparently. This track is not a radio track (probably too NSFW) but it's another simple and good hip hop song with the right amount of Beastie Boys feedback/reverb. I made a onesie with the line at this beginning, ' I get funky like diaper rash ' and added this Beasties Lego image I stole from the internet, and all four of our boys wore it. (You wanted to know this.) I don't care if you listen to it or not. (Listen to it, it's short)

2. 'She's Crafty', License to Ill. Maybe I should have included 'Fight for your Right', because that is this Bud-drinking Beasties. And the 'Fight for Your Right Revisited' is a nice touch for the end of their days. But 'She's Crafty' is the perfect song from this album, and one of their best, or at least one of my faves.

1. 'Three MC's and One DJ', Hello Nasty/Anthology. When I first heard this I was unimpressed. And the song probably isn't that great. But the live video is perfect, and perfectly Beasties, and changed my view on the song.

It's the craft of singing two parts both telling a story that Liz Fraser does. The second vocal in this is sublime in what it conveys.
That the technique she uses for her voice, sometimes stretching the emphasis on words in English, inventing words, even reciting the latin names for butterflies, puts her up above most vocalists regardless who they are.
You don't need to know the words just appreciate her voice as an instrument.
Genius.

Been played their new complication loads recently. Think I became lazy in listening to only a few albums

I’ve gone for the ‘Chemical Brothers’ as they’ve evolved a fair bit over the years which should make for a more interesting and varied 10.

In no particular order:

Free Yourself

Their latest track.
It sounds both oldskool and modern all at once and still feels like a Chemical Bros tune.

The Sunshine Underground

Probably the most technically accomplished track they’ve ever produced.
From their ‘Surrender’ album about 20 years ago and it still sounds different and fresh to this day.
It’s difficult to even explain this track to anyone, if you only listen to one track from this list, make it this one!

Get Up On It Like This

Always loved this one with its almost 80’s style electro-funk groove, complete with record scratches.

The Private Psychedelic Reel

Probably my all time track from these.
I remember hearing from his for the first time in the 90’s when I was around 14. The build up, that little drum fill then the drop blew my mind back then. There was nothing else quite like it around at the time.

Left Right

They’ve never shy’d away from their hip-hop influences and have collaborated with and remixed a fair few hip hop artists. This is my best of the bunch.

The Pills Won’t Help You Now

Something a bit more down tempo.

Acid Children

Remember hearing them play this at Creamfields about 15 years ago. I’m an sucker for a 303 baseline.

Under The Influence (Live)

Speaking of live. If you’ve never experienced one of their live shows, you are seriously missing out.

Out Of Control

This was doing the rounds in a few of the clubs back when I was 16 and looked just old enough to blag my way into a few :D
It also introduced me to Bernard Sumner and New Order (He provides vocals and guitars here)

Alive Alone

Beth Orton provides a guest vocal on just about all of their albums and is known by fans as “The Chemical Sister”
Had to choose this one as it was their first and best imo.

;)

Good thread.

Siouxsie and the Banshees.

Hong Kong Garden. About Skinheads making the staff if a her local Chinese takeaway a misey.

Suburban Relapse. This one is about committing crimes under the stresses of everyday life.

Christine. About a real person called Christine Seisnal diagnosed with 22 personalities.

Israel. The Banshees version of a Christmas song.

Into the light/Night shift both all from one of my favourite albums JuJu. Night Shift is about Peter Sutcliffe and worryingly I love the line 'f*** the mothers, kill the others'

Slowdive. Great song about a woman receiving oral.

Dazzle. Love the more classical into and the way the song builds.

Cities in Dust. Inspired by the volcano at Pompeii. They use this song to good effect in the film Grosse Point Blank.

Return. A beautiful song full of regret regarding Budgies infidelity.
