I used to hate "art," - whatever that was. Wasn't interested in it, beyond an obsession with punk/pop/post punk music and a few good books. These days, though, I'm falling more and more into it. It speaks to me now. I'm lucky enough to live in London and so I've been able to go to The National Gallery a few times and marvel at this, The Arnolfini Marriage (1434) by Jan Van Eyck.

It's as much a puzzle as a picture, but wonderful for it. Just look at the detail. And it was painted nearly six hundred years ago! That makes it mediaeval and yet it looks so amazingly modern. Way ahead of its time and filled with meaning and mystery.

I'll say more about it later but first of all, post about a favourite painting of yours here. You don't even have to say much - just put summat up (god knows, I'm no expert). Free your mind and your ass will follow....

Over to you.

I'll return to this when at the pc. But have favourite artists more than specific pieces.

i had long "argue" about this painting in finnish science forum. i said the reflection in the mirrow is wrong. but those more intelligent ones made me believe that the reflection is right. (those who do not know what im talking about, when you see that mirrow bigger you see more about this painting, it is the point).

i was standing in front of mirror with my coworker and we were sure the reflection was made wrong but, shiiiiiiiiit, science got us.

The only problem I have is that she is wearing a watch on her right hand.

I do like the works of Vermeer though......

I love this. I love the sky - you see skies like this sometimes, kind of weird yellowish, sad skies and the light is gorgeous, but you can't quite put your finger on why? Well I do, anyway.
