What made it worse for Matt was that Glenn Hoddle was his hero growing up

Bad times

I ultimately agree with Hoddle though

I think Wright, Shearer, Beardsley, Ferdinand and Sherigham were all better choices than Le Tiss in the mid to late 90's. I certainly wouldn't have picked him over those 5

Shearer and Sherigham would have always been my first choice pair

I might have given Shearer and Sutton a chance based on their League form though

And look where it got Hoddle, and later Keegan. Nowhere. Sometimes an average team with high hopes needs to take a chance on a rare talent, otherwise nothing happens. See Venables with letting Gazza have his way: almost got England a major final that.

Shearer + Le Tissier...tasty!

Shearer and Sherigham mauled Holland like

And they were excellent in qualifying for the 98 World Cup as well

They were deservedly the first choice tandem for a while

Probably the best England partnership since Lineker and Beardsley

Hard to argue against that, they were indeed superlative in '96. Venables didn't call much wrong in his tenure.

Qualifying form, as any England fan will tell you, is essentially meaningless. Saying that, England were pretty decent in the '98 WC too, unlucky to come up against a strong Argentina.

It was the loss to Romania which ultimately cost them that World Cup

They win that and they avoid Argentina all together

Even if they'd beaten Argentina, they would have had to beat Holland, Brazil and then France to win the Cup

That may have been too big an ask

Hoddle's side at their peak were excellent though

They played Italy off the park in Rome to secure qualification and would have won if Wright had passed to Sheringham as opposed to going for a shot from a tight angle

I've got a feeling this was a cup tie rather than a league game, but details aside, I'll go with because it had both the audacity to even try such a shot and the skill to pull it off. Of course, he ripped off Mancini so it wasn't original, but still.

I'd love England to host another big tournament, it seems to bring the best out of the players. Really enjoyed the '96 side, even as a German.

Bit off-topic, but I believe the key to success for England in tournaments is to have more of their top players going abroad. It'll help cure this odd collective homesickness.

Very Zola that...him, Le Tiss and Thierry Henry are big non-Everton favourites of mine.

The first goal here

Arsenal and then United played some fantastic stuff between 2002 and 2008.

Yup, I'm just glad that I was just about old enough to be able to appreciate it. The skill and entertainment value in the premier league has been gradually declining since .
