Young players -- AGAIN !!

Zatara

Player Valuation: £100m
Me again......as regular posters know I am ALWAYS going on about the need to bring in young players to take over from the older guys who to me should be phased out / sold.

Barkley and Vellios seemed to have great understanding together -- they both looked absolutely top class in their link up play and ith a few more cameos I think they can really come on and boost the first team.

Drenthe and Coleman on the flanks bring pace and power -- we have been missing this in the past few seasons.

Rodwell and Fellaini totally dominated the centre of the pitch.....

Now, all we need are Duffy / Mustafi / Dier etc to push Distin and either a right back or right midfielder to play next to Coleman and we're away....

Midfield/ Attack

Coleman.......Fellaini......Rodwell......Drenthe

............................Barkley

............................Vellios

Potentially VERY good. Well done Mr Moyes and the reserve + youth coaches + scouts !

They just need to play.

Moyes should start trying to rely on them more because they're all his has rather than start playing players out of position.

Osman goes on the wing after this game...Moyes has really lost it

Soon enough he'll start us in a 5-5-0 formation with two wing backs.

I have to say when Vellios and Barkley linked up so well I creamed my pants.

19 and 17 respectively, and they ripped a hole through the middle of a tough, experienced PL defence.

Financially we're in a mess but thank [Poor language removed] we have an ace academy and scouting system.

I agree, I was happy with my head when Arteta left (not with my heart)....as it meant we would most likely see Rodwell and Fellaini together.

If you look at midfield/attack with;

Vellios 19
Stracqualursi -- 23

Rodwell -- 20
Fellaini -- 23
Coleman -- 22
Drenthe --24
Gueye -- 21
Barkley -- 17

We have 8 players there (obviously 2 on loan + Baxter/Wallace/Forshaw yet to really make a mark) for 6 positions.

Add a couple more players into the mix (under 21's) and we're looking very tidy for the next decade.

I STILL think 1 top young forward is needed, perhaps Cahill / Anichebe / Saha going could enable us to move for one (depending on how the other forwards play).

Hibbert / Neville / Distin / Heitinga -- I hope we have the young players to come through to take over these positions.

Coleman has to be our long term RB. CB I suppose is the worry. Heitinga's only 27 and Jags will have a few years left. Distin age-wise should be nearly done but somehow he's in the form of his life and fit as a fiddle, so who knows?

I just pray one or two of these young strikers pan out. That's where we're weakest. Vellios today though looked sensational.

I'm all for incorporating youth, but to phase out / sell the older players while starting teenagers every game like you suggest stinks of FIFA tactics and you make yourself look stupid.

And its why Im a bit perplexed about Anichebe playing ahead of Vellios. That chance he had when he did a little flick with one foot past Given then hit the ball with his other and it was cleared off the line is something Anichebe hasnt got the talent or skill to do. He would've probably fell over looking for a peno.

Everytime I've seen Vellios is looks like he's got great technical skils and feet to go with his height

True...but Im hoping that Moyes will put faith into them rather than moving your Cahill's, Osman's, Heitinga's, Neville's to left wing, right wing, centre half etc etc when we've got talent that can play

Common sense lad..

My point is that this Zatara fellow needs to show a bit more respect to the old guard.. This isn't FIFA 11 where you can field a whole team of U-20's and watch them progress to elite premier league players in two years time..

Is he saying to put all those players in now?

I thought he was just highlighting the promise in the squad. How we've got players lining up to pressure and eventually replace the old guard.

I'm not saying to START teenagers mate.

I'm simply saying that we POTENTIALLY have some VERY exciting young talents + to add to that with a couple of very good U21 players I think we'd be set for the next decade.....with MORE young players such as Lundstrum and Hope potentially pushing through.

This HAS to be the main strategy and, to be honest what would we be losing in midfield/ attack;

Osman -- Will always be in the squad due to his boyhood ties.
Anichebe -- Useless, seeing Vellios today just shows how bad Anichebe really is, and hes no kid anymore.
Saha -- ALWAYS injured and contract up at end of the season
Cahill -- Same for me as Arteta, heart loves him but head says BIG contract + still has re-sale value
Bilyaletdinov -- Coleman and Drenthe look superior on the flanks for me....potentially 5mil to be banked.

So, hardly a MASSIVE clearout needed, I can see Bily, Saha, Anichebe all gone at the end of the season and possibly Cahill too if a big enough offer comes in (now best mate Arteta has gone?)...

WHO exactly are the old guard though ?

Attack -- Saha / Anichebe = Saha NEVER plays and Anichebe is Useless.
Attacking midfield -- Osman / Bilyaletdinov (Osman wont be sold BUT bily will probably be offloaded)
Both roles -- Cahill = As I just posted, I have the same feelings for him as Arteta.....

Old guard are surely only Cahill and Osman ? Neither of whom are likely to be sold so in fact would be good mentors for the young lads....

I think you underestimate Osman, he's a fine player as well a blue, but you're mostly spot on. The squad badly needs refeshing and we seem to have the youth to at least partly do that which is nice. Moyes just needs to be bold enough to play them.

Would love to see Vellios starting games.
