You wonder why Yanks get so defensive here

I'd love to get some of the guys on that board into a thread with some of the louder anti-Football guys here and just watch as heads explode.

The USMNT determines a lot. *If* they ever go on a run in the WC like '02 again...getting to a quarter or, God help us, a semi or final...you would see an explosion. The biggest weapon we have against this bias is patriotism.

Basically look at what happened to Hockey in this country after 1980. Before that it was a regional sport and a local sport if your city had an NHL team. After Lake Placid, it exploded.

Hockey is still a niche sport that is awful on TV. Footie will always be no better than a niche sport as well no matter how well the national team does. And there is nothing wrong with that (hopefully MLS gets the message and does not overextend themselves) there are plenty of people in this country.

Times have changed you are no longer called a F---ot for liking soccer in the states (yippie!!) and Americans generally like soccer now. yIts just that they like footie in small bite sized doses, like the Olympics (only a bit more popular than the olympics now.

As far as complaining about the draw, it seems like England has been whining more about it (arrgh Urugray, Italy, the weather). I personally like the draw, its no harder than the 2009 Confed cup group (you know the tourney we proved we can hang with some world class clubs) better to lose to Germany in the group stages than the knockout stages (and we might get to play BELGIANS!) I only wish all of our matches were on the equator in the middle of the jungle as its not different that travelling to central america.
