Yeah, unless the American in question is a stated soccer fan, I don't even bother discussing the sport or the national team especially with them.

The USMNT determines a lot. *If* they ever go on a run in the WC like '02 again...getting to a quarter or, God help us, a semi or final...you would see an explosion. The biggest weapon we have against this bias is patriotism.

Basically look at what happened to Hockey in this country after 1980. Before that it was a regional sport and a local sport if your city had an NHL team. After Lake Placid, it exploded.
