The [Poor language removed] do we have to pay £50m to commemorate the war?

We can all pay our respects without making it a media hooplah and spunking more money on things that marginally take our minds off the mess we're currently in for about 5 minutes...ridiculous.

Seems to me like he wants to get his name on something so that he isn't remembered as being a complete arse.

Give over.

Any prime minister would have been pressured into making a big deal about the centenary of the first world war, and i guarantee you a massive deal would have been made out of it if he hadn't done something grand than the murmurs of wasted money he'll get now.

Did you actually listen to what he said the money is going towards ?

Education, improving the WW1 museum, those two will take up a large portion of the budget. Not a 'media hooplah'.

Besides, if there's anything that DOES deserve a big deal being made about it and the media attention which it would bring, it's the 100th anniversary of one of the defining events of modern civilisation.

Another masterstroke by our glorious conservative leader. What was he going to do with that spare 50m? Give it to liverpool? Ha!

Cmon guys it is one of the biggest events in History! It deserves to be preserved and some people could do with learning about the war in more depth

The UK prior to 1914 was a place where toffs ruled, where the lower orders (in general) knew their place, where wealth belonged to a particular class who went to public schools and Oxbridge, and then forth to rule the far-flung Empire, and was to trickle down to the masses. The world in 1918 was a radically changed place. Perhaps the present UK government, pushing back to 1914 standards, would prefer not to remember that.

The Tories want any event that underlines the stuff they think they have a monopoly on and that will give them an electoral boost. It's the most cynical exploitation of the dead since his last stunt on that score...erm...yesterday.
