Watched a documentary on channel 5 last night about WW1. They were interviewing loads of veterans, and it looked like the interview had been done recently. Are there that many 111 years olds about then? Or would the interviews have taken place ten years or so before this? I would've thought there are pretty much no WW1 veterans left

i think we lost the last one this year or last year i seem to remember a news report along those lines.
Harry Patch was one of the last " the mad piper" as they called him lol

God speed Boys your service will NEVER be forgotten

Only about two British WW1 vets.

EDIT: actually just one woman who served in the RAF, she's 110.

Two left worldwiide besides that: an American Naval vet and a Polish infantryman, both 111.

Sad to think that awful war has passed more or less from living memory now we can only hope that its lessons will be learnt one day

WW1 was a ridiculous waste of life, with the trenches and being ordered to march into into 'no mans land'. 30 000 French soldiers executed for refusing to do it, so there was no way out. Madness

All war is a waste of life though i agree the sheer scale of it was utter madness

Madness it may well have been. But the men of Britain were mostly volunteers as they believed in what they were doing. A whole generation of the talented and the honourable perished doing what they felt was right. By today's standards it was a rediculous waste of life, but I wouldn't like to second guess what it meant to those who actually fought......
