Torn between two worlds at the minute and really not sure what to do.

One hand I work in a decent job that's a job for life. However trying to progress or even get away from where I am has proven to be impossible , even with all the answers and experience. I am massively under appreciated in what I do so the department would miss me quite a bit. However the day to day workings is something to look forward to , I enjoy who I work with and ideally it's a career even without the career aspect.

On the other I am being poached for a job working for a company . The job is completely different , as a writer online and other internetty stuff for the company. The person who wants me to do it has been asking me a while now and he will match my income. I'd be working from home, completely online and I'd enjoy the role more but then it's a massive risk to move from where I am now given I still have another 30 years of work at least. I'd lose a pension that's only a year old but there would be more money in the bank each month. I'd be self employed however which is where the risk comes into it.

So what would you do? Give up a job trapped in a department that massively underappreciated you but you enjoy doing or give it all up and risk a job that may not last 30 years but more money and independence and feel wanted by your employer?

Have no idea which one to do. If I take the job then I'll be fearful for the future one day. If I don't take the job I may regret it if I'm still trapped in the role I'm in years down the line.

For context , I basically built an entire clinic system not too long ago , around 2 months worth of work, not an easy task to do solo. My thanks from my superiors was to push me off the project , stop me getting any credit and ignored all my input. Whereas the new job would trust me in my abilities

So what would you do?

Get another job lined up then quit - in these times......

I'd go for it.

It's a risk, but you'll likely be thinking "what if?" for years afterwards if you don't.

Do it mate. Better to regret something you have done than something you haven't.

And as somebody who hates their job, I'd take your arm off for an opportunity like that.

You must weigh up the pros-and-cons and decide upon the future path for yourself. An important part of that is job security. The present pandemic has thrown that up into sharp relief.

And I would comment on what I have underlined above. The day after to quit the job, you are history. The company, and your ex-colleagues, will move on instantly. Everyone can be replaced. The hard, cold, facts are that you are just a payroll number, like everyone else. Be under no illusion about that.

Difficult choice. Enjoying the job is a major plus and by no means guaranteed when you change. This needs to be weighed up against the new job as does it sound like the kind of thing you would enjoy.
You context is also important - if you have a mortgage, dependents, how old you are how flexible you ate in your work practice. These are factors to consider when thinking about risk.

A few years ago I encouraged my missus, who worked as my lab technician in a school to seek a better job. She got a job for Honda doing chemical compliance. Within 3 years she was better paid than me (head of dept with 25 years experience ffs!).
A few years later she got frustrated and went to work for Dyson doing the same - more money. After 3 months there she was head hunted within Dyson and worked on the car project. 6 months later she was handed a giant redundancy cheque as the car was cancelled, but also invited to go back to normal Dyson (no cheque .... bugger off!) So off she went to Bentley as a contractor. Long drive - so two months later a completely different job locally working dishing out research funding for the government - half the pay.
What I'm saying is no job can be seen as long term any more. Once you had to be experienced- an expert. But today variety is good on the cv - it shows flexibility and various skills.

Things to consider.

It is your life. If somebody wants you to be self-employed you become more disposable though.

A job is a job and if you are happy as you are then stay.

Some will say the current situation should throw more weight behind the argument to stay put with more job security. The counter to that argument is that the current situation should actually highlight how precious life is and therefore you should spend it doing something you love. I would take the plunge.

Hand in your notice at the company you work for and see if they come back with a counter offer, if they want to give you 5 extra thousand to stay then you'll have a conundrum. ;)

Hard to say seen as you basically like your job.
'Job for life' sounds like a dangerous phrase, though, not too many of those left. It's risky to stay passive in a role for years, esp one that isn't giving you due recognition, as if it folds or things change dramatically it could leave you in a difficult spot with a thin cv.
Depends a lot on your age IMO, if you're older you will have already done great works and can afford a cushier role. If you're closer to the start of your career then the end it's not the time to be getting the pipe and slippers out.
