I've really got into Spanish reds over the last few years. Riojas are well know in the UK of course and are invariably good quality it seems to me but Ribera del Duero wines from the north west of Spain are arguably even better.
Last Christmas i used one of those vouchers you get with Amazon deliveries to order a dozen quality Spanish reds from Laithwaites Wine merchant. Now I have a dozen delivered every four months.

I normally drink Rose if I'm having a meal with me bird. usually the second cheapest up from a bottle of house wine is the one I go for cos I don't wanna look tight.
Most I've paid was £60. Was the same as the stuff she gets for a fiver but got me well more rotten.

When I 18 my folks were away leaving me to mind the house. I was having a session with a few mates and I ran out of sauce. I rooted through all my old man's hiding places and found this bottle of red sneakilly ferreted away. With joy at my discovery I uncorked the sucker and necked it down in a pint glass. A couple of weeks later, my father bursts into my room, his face like thunder: "You drank it, didn't you?" he demanded. I was fairly stoned at the time and said, "Yeah, chill out man, I'll replace it, no biggie pops." I literally thought he was going to explode at my atttitude. "Oh, replace it, will you - so you have a spare £500 on you, do you?" I nearly fainted. "You're uncle gave me that as a special present and I was saving it for a special occasion."
I was sick. He made it worse by saying he didn't want it replaced, and he had thought better of me and made me admit that I just drank it to get drunk. He said if I had actually savoured it, and appreciated it, he would have been alright about it. I was in the dog house for months after that.
