Scorsese got a sympathy Oscar for The Departed, which isn’t even close to being his best film, so yeah, I’d be inclined to agree that merit doesn’t always come into it.I suspect such gongs and pats on the back are given to fairly ok films that have disappointed at the box office and so need to gather a bit more cash through DVD sales.
