They were the overwhelming favourites in their group. All 3 other teams were hugely inferior- Algeria, Russia, Korea. Against a top team thats taking the game to them I think you'd see them play with the expected excitement and flair.
But that type of team is not USA.
So I reckon Belgium won't be given the chance to show what they can do.
 

I'm going to go for Brazil, Columbia, Netherlands, Costa Rica, France, Germany, Argentina and Belgium to qualify for the quarters.
 
People are talking about weak teams but everyone (apart from Greece) probably deserves to be there and were much better than the supposedly big countries they have supplanted. Like, Costa Rica are class and don't look to be punching above their weight. Algeria look like they could give Germany a game, and I think the Swiss are much better than the team that got pummelled by France. With Turan back, Chile could do a number on what looks to be a pretty average Brazilian side if the decisions don't go against them. I think the last 16 will spring a few surprises.

It might appear like this but Greece are just a slow burning side, late starters. It takes them a while to find their feet but ultimately they time their runs to pretty much perfection.

I'm totally expecting a 'very' different and bold Greece against Costa Rica with a performance that will vindicate their inclusion.

They will be feeling very fortunate to have Costa Rica at this stage of a World Cup even though C.R have been the surprise team. In these kind of situations the Greeks are frighteningly efficient.

Brazil - winners (58,62,70.94 and 2002)
Chile - Third Place (62) - if anyone is interested Chile were disqualified for the 90' world cup and banned from 94' world cup the reason being:

In 1989, Rojas was in goal for Chile's 1990 FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Brazil at Rio de Janeiro's Maracanã stadium. Chile, down 1-0, would be eliminated from the upcoming World Cup if they lost. Around the 70-minute mark, Rojas fell to the pitch writhing and holding his forehead. A firework, thrown from the stands by a Brazilian fan named Rosenery Mello do Nascimento, was smoldering about a yard away. Rojas had deliberately cut himself with a razor hidden in his glove in an attempt to have the match nullified and possibly have Brazil penalized by FIFA. Rojas, his head bloodied, was carried off the field; his teammates then refused to return claiming that conditions were unsafe. The match was unfinished.

Video evidence later showed that Rojas had not been hit by the firework. His head injury was discovered to have been self-inflicted with a razor blade hidden in his glove. FIFA awarded Brazil a 2-0 win, effectively eliminating Chile from the 1990 World Cup. As a consequence, Chile was banned from the 1994 FIFA World Cup and Rojas was banned for life, along with the coach Orlando Aravena and the team doctor Daniel Rodriguez.[1]

Mexico - Quarter Finals (70 and 86) - (ironically both times they qualified for the quarter finals was when they hosted the World Cup)

Nigeria - Last 16 (thus far.....) (94, 98 and 2014)
Algeria - Last 16 (thus far....) (2014)
Switzerland - Quarter Finals (34,38 and 1954 - which was hosted in Switzerland)
USA - Semi Finals (1930)
Belgium - Fourth - (1986)

So far those who have qualified we have

Brazil - a world cup winner
Colombia - performing at their best in a world cup
Netherlands - a former world cup finalist

whoever goes through from tonight's game will also be performing at their best in a world cup (greece or costa rica)

if Argentina, Germany and France qualify as expected that will be 3 more world cup winners in the quarter finals

7/8 teams that progress into the quarters finals will either have been previous winners/ finalists/ or performing at their best

what a wonderful world cup we have had thus far.

no time for sentimental value if i have to watch them two slug out a WC QF instead of a boss germany vs france match i will cry
