The birth of American footie was in '94.

There was promise in the late 70's and early 80's with the NASL, but it died a swift and painful death...sadly I have to give Fifa some credit in choosing America for '94.

So what you're saying is we have the 94 world cup to thank for giving the world Jozy?

Thanks world cup 94.

The best one was the 1930 wc. USA finishing third, who would have predicted that? And of course an average of more than 3 goals a game.

Ray Houghton's winner against Italy, followed by the worst forward role ever, is one of my earliest football memories

Funny how it was in New York, so most people thought that Italy were going to be the home team, but the majority of the supporters in the ground were Irish

Maybe Italian-Americans don't like footy?

One of my faves Bry.

Great memories of that game where the goal broke. Can't remember who was in the game, Mexico maybe.

Anyway, it went on really late as they couldn't fix the goal, had to get a replacement, dad and me fell asleep, woke up just as penos started. I wonder if this is where my love for the shoot outs started actually.

Also, Yordan Letchkov diving header. Boss @DualityNSNO

Roy Hodgson managing Switzerland is still weird.

Thomas Brolin being the tits.

Half fit Baggio dragging Italy through the whole tournament.

Diana Ross missing a PENO with an open goal in the opening ceremony.

Great days.
She was never the same after that achiles tendon injury. Boss slotter back in the day though.

Or am I getting her mixed up with Yakubu?

Apart from the Bulgarians beating the Germans, it was an utterly forgettable WC. That final, oh dear.

Last year was the best by far.

Best World Cup ever.

We were boss, even though half our team looked like 50 year old gastarbeiters, and to boot, Diana Ross did this (as @ijjysmith said):

The kick was so bad, the posts just fell apart ffs

Mexico 86 looked pretty good. France v. Brazil, USSR V Belgium, England v Argentina, arg v ger was a boss final. You had Maradona taking the piss out of everyone. Denmark were boss. Etc

Never actually watched the Final of this one before today, as I was too young to stay up and watch it back when it happened

Watching it now, it's nowhere near as bad as people make out

It's not particularly good or anything, but at least both sides are trying

The heat just kills the pace though. Even with that, both teams fashion some good chances

Compared to the bad tempered brawl that was the Final of Italia 90', this one wasn't too bad

I'm surprised they chose the Rose Bowl as the venue for the Final in all honesty

Wouldn't it have been smarter to have it further up North where there was a chance the weather would have been a bit cooler? I'm not really sure enough about American geography really say one way or the other. Any of our American friends on here who could possibly answer that one for me?

Brian Moore and Ron Atkinson just BURY the match on commentary too, and I have to wonder why. There's certainly effort and endeavour from both sides. Maybe they were grumpy about having to sit in the sun with no cover for over 2 hours?

Seriously, the extra time in the 94 Final is fantastic. Unbelievable that neither of the sides were able to slot a winner. Romario in particular put a shot agonisingly past the post

The first 90 minutes were serviceable, but the last 30 were top stuff
