Mrs Caolam wants a wood burner. What are the thoughts on them, preferably from people who have one. Been told that they aren’t economically viable if you run radiators off them.
All advice, all sensible advice welcome.

I’ve got one and it takes ages to heat the house off the radiators. If I get in at 6 will take a good few hours to get comfortable. There is quite a big difference in quality and efficiency between models like and a lot depends on how insulated your house is. Also going out and chopping wood is very satisfying.

As the old saying goes, 'using a wood stove heats you twice'
I love them, there's nothing like a cranking wood stove in the winter, lot of down sides mind, mess, hassle, slow to get the house warmed up

Brilliant if you scavenge and dry the wood properly. Buy and learn to use a chainsaw safely theres plenty of fallen wood about to collect once you start looking. Dry felled wood FOR AT LEAST a year to release most heat and least fumes. Avoid painted, mdf or chipboard as they soot up the chimney.

Back boilers and radiators distribute the heat but you won't enjoy the same intense heat from the fire as its sapped away. You'll also need to burn a lot more wood to heat your whole home than way.

You need ventilation at low and high level in the room where the burner is located.

We have one that doesn't try to do anything but heat one room. It's brilliant in all fairness, particularly in winter. Also great in spring and autumn for those times when you wonder whether the central heating should be on or not. Usually the answer is no because we've lit the fire ...

Got a multi fuel stove, I don’t run radiators off it, that’s more of a range job, no?

Mine is 7kw and is great, love it. Wouldn’t be without one now, well worth the effort.

Running rads off them kills the in room heat. If you need or want rads, get another system gas or whatever and keep the
Woodburner for your main room...if you've prelaid the fire you'll be feeling the heat in 20 mins...and they do throw the heat out.
Wood:
Is there a handy supplier? 2 or 3 cu metres will last a winter.
By us the deliver guy comes in a hilux+ sized ute and dumps it at the top of your drive
Then you have to move it off the pavement
Then you have to stack it and store it somewhere dry, but handy.
Some will need splitting by hand.
Then you'll need kindling - you can buy it but it aint cheap, chopping 4x4 pieces into kindling is time consuming.
So thats a big sharp wood splitter axe/wedge and small sharp axe...these axes you buy from your hardwa re store will not be sharp enough, it will need touching up to get a decent edge.
They cant have proper too sharp axes in the store...H&S

They look good in the lifestyle progs and are warm but in reality a load of mither.

The good news is you can but a cast iron propane powered look a like.
Click and its on and in 20 mins you're turning it down because you're too hot

That all I got

based on evening use and a NZ mildish winter
Also buy your wood in April / May, incase the supplier hasnt dried it enough

wet wood wont burn well

3 cu m. of wood takes up a lot of space

How big is your house and or rooms, are you open plan
Your average uk 4 by 5 room will be like a sauna

Have you got space to swing an axe...preferably covered out of the rain

Don't know much about this issue but instead of the time consuming (and expensive) kindling, can't you get 'firelighters'?
