Wing backs?

The 4-5-1,4-4-1-1 and 4-2-3-1 is transient. The best teams are fluid. The 4-2-3-1 most respresents the style of play we should be going for imo but it doesn't have to be restrictive.

There is a big difference.

We don't actually play 4-5-1, by the way. It's usually 4-4-1-1, as Cahill plays behind the striker.

The difference with a 4-2-3-1 is the personnel. If you have a fluid 3 then it gives you a cutting edge that we lack with a 4-4-1-1, as we're quite rigid and predictable.

That's kind of what I am saying. The personnel almost impose the formation by the way they play.

Exactly. And I think it works to be honest, assuming the players we've picked are right. Osman for example really needs to be the one behind the striker. He's devastating there but comparatively ineffective out wide.

It doesn't matter what we'd pick, Moyes sticks to what he knows and will not change.

Moyes plays the best formation for the players availble to him. I would love Everton to have the players to play a 3 4 3 formation, but we don't.

Just watching the Leicester Cardiff game with Beckford playing in a 442 system as a lot of fans felt we should have played to get the most out of him. He's worse than when he played for us. Perhaps Moyes has a better grasp of the players than we think.

Yeah well everyone can see anywhere in the middle is better than out wide for Osman!

Drenthe looks capable of adding the proverbial new dimension to our attacking play. I was intrigued by the thought of Coleman and Baines as wing backs when we didn't have any wingers, but we've got one now. As someone said Baines already gets forward enough for us without the need for a third center half.

When Moyes gets over his caution with Drenthe and Vellios - which he will do eventually, he's always like this with new personnel in the team - I think we're well set up to play the 4-2-3-1/4-5-1 effectively.

Howard
Neville Jagielka Distin Baines
Rodwell Fellaini
Coleman Barkley Drenthe
Vellios

Would love that to be our usual eleven in the near future with old hands like Osman and Cahill still making plenty of appearances where the opposition requires it, and Magaye Gueye given a fighting chance of challenging for one of the wide berths.
