I think old Woy pulled a masterstroke with Townsend and he looks good to be a regular starter for england now. If Barkley continues his progression this season then england are going to have a couple of exciting young players who could make an impact.

Anyone feel there could be a Gascoigne moment a-la Italia 90? With Jags now first choice CB and Baines looking like he could be in the box seat, I actually have an interest in england doing well

You do sense the press are pinning their hopes on the young lads. From the cupboard being bare, we now have Townsend, Barkley and even Morrison being lauded as saviours.

Of course, we've been here before with Oxlade-Chamberlain, Cleverly, Wilshere et al, none of whom have gone to do anything of note.

It's probably best to have low expectations and give the players a chance to actually develop some hype where it matters in a major tournament.

Not to say he won't do good things, but we've had a host of players like that in recent years, from SWP to Aaron Lennon all the way through to Walcott. All have promised much without really delivering. Not at the very highest level anyway.
