It's virtually accepted now that there are different criteria for what constitutes a foul depending on whether it's inside or outside the box. But one difference that rarely gets commented on is the one where if a player gets a shot off in the box and is then taken out by a late challenge by the defender there is no penalty given, when anywhere else on the field if its a late challenge its a foul.
There was a classic instance of this last night in the chance Mirallas had from an angle in the second half. He met the ball first time on the half volley and it went just over the bar. But a split second after he'd hit it a Palace defender came in and took him off at the ankles! No penalty given. No appeals by Everton. It seems that if it's in the area and you get the shot off then the late tackle doesn't matter. Lay off a pass in the middle of the park and be on the receiving end of a late tackle and it's a free kick. Very strange.
