When we arrived there though Kiwi's told us that their Govt has sold us a 60 year old ethos regarding employment, everyone getting 1/2 an acre and such. When it was a Dairy Farm for the UK they were fine, but Ted Heath and the common Market with it's excess off milk, butter and stuff halted their economy right there and then, something that they've never really recovered from.
Crime levels lower than uk but when you start looking at it per capita it isn't, there was something about being more likely to be stabbed during a burglary than anywhere else on the globe, when the population is so small the figures can skew any way you wish to make them tbh.
Others that I know that went to Aukland when we went to Christchurch though seemed to be living in a completely different economy, their wages were way higher, so was rent but over all they seemed way better off financially. It was ok as long as you was staying in NZ but the way exchange rates went meant that we were on less than a fiver an hour when translating it back to the UK economy.

like a lot of places ok if you have a ( relative ) few bob
plenty of places you wouldn't go without a minder or 2
But yes, plenty of scenery, well worth a visit...........again like a lot of places
Though MMP is a complete dogs breakfast of a way to run a Country
